Makers with children

Hi All,

Just creating this thread after speaking with @sabtab about using the space with young children in tow. We were wondering if there might be good times of the week to use the space at the same time. Maybe support each other in nipping off to do dangerous jobs while the kids huddle in the play pen. Reply to this thread if it’s of interest.

I am free (but with 21 month old) on Fridays so this would be a good time for me).

We have a playpen, and some longer term ‘plans’ to make the social area child friendly and secure – just waiting for someone to take it on as a project.

I’m trying to organise a regular child friendly space/event. I’d be happy to turn it into a very open, bring your child to the space session. I think at this stage it’s just about trying things out to see what works!
Me and @emuboy will be hosting a child friendly electronics focused session tomorrow at 12pm (electronics for the children to do) I believe (I’ll link the session later) and depending on demand/attendance it can be a sort of ad hoc bring your child in while you get on with a project event!

Also happy for anyone who wants to be part of organising it and helping host/maybe taking turns with child supervision

Also, to keep this on topic I think I should add, I’m happy to come to the space some Fridays to be sociable and help with child supervision. I can come on my own during the morning or later around 4 or so with my 8 year old!

Ok it’s good to know there is interest! Will come back with suggestions for things! Have a 6 year old who wants to make a robot, and an almost 2 year old who wants to break things her sister makes so could be interesting…

Popped in with my daughter on Sunday to do some printing and there were a group of parents and kids doing awesomeness with little motors and batteries making their own spirographs. My daughter was welcomed in and shown how to do it and she had such a great time. I was so frazzled by the printer not cooperating with me that I didn’t make a note of who everyone was so I can bring my daughter along next time?

Thanks so much to those who included her (particularly young Tatiana!). Would love to do more things like this with her!

That sounds really lovely, would love to join another time also. I’ve got an 8 and 5 year old who love to make things and then a similar 2 year old who can be relied on for unmaking them
Hope to see you soon

Sunday would have been this —

Wow this is the perfect idea! That was me and my daughter  I’m so pleased your daughter enjoyed it! It was lovely to see them playing together.

I think I should order some supplies (it’s around £4 for a motor and battery holder) and we should make some more of them! Tatiana took her motor to school and has spent hours with it since Sunday. I hadn’t even thought to run a session with that at the space. We will have to plan a date!

I’ll create a poll and a thread somewhere on discourse today. If you want to give me some dates you’re available @sarah_smith and @Jez_Wyatt I can take them into account. I’m away from 24th to 30th but otherwise pretty flexible.

The beauty of the activity is that younger kids and older kids can all enjoy it, and it should appeal to girls and boys!

Thanks so much @hannahintech it has made my daughter Bonnie very interested in coming again! This sounds so good and I completely agree that this particular activity is great with younger kids too! We are away quite a bit over the holidays but around first weekend of August and September. Don’t arrange around us though. We will try and join if we can!

I am working on something with the printer at the moment (that I was trying to get working on sunday) Once (if!) I iron out the issues with it I think there would be loads of potential for an all age workshop on this too. So will come back on that! 8

Ahh that sounds lovely. Dates wise we are flexible, first weekend of August works for us too (like @sarah_smith) or good availability in summer (tho can’t do wkend of 19th Aug) but also you don’t have to plan it around me if you’d rather combine with future Raspberry Pie Jam action
