The plan for Sunday is to get a small team working on the wall to finish that off, while another team begins putting up batons for the lining.

Dust is becoming a problem and will only get worse. Maybe repurpose the tarp so that the two phases can be more easily sealed off from each other for the next couple of months? Decorating drop cloth is cheap and may be a part of the solution. -Dermot

Would be great to get all hands on deck for a big push before Christmas!

These events aren’t exactly commencing on the stroke of eleven o’clock these days.

If anyone planning on coming down this morning is passing by somewhere where sand may be procured. We need this to make any progress on the great wall today.

also, does anyone know where the drill chargers have been shoved?

Yeah, that’s right, we built the crap out of that wall.

We also started batoning, on both sides one long strip down the middle.


Also, the staging is out, found and up. We have extricated the door from piles of crap. In short we’re blasting along*

We could do with a bunch of 8mm SDS drill bits as we’ll probably mess those up. Anyone that has an SDS drill to lend would also be most praised, that way we can get several teams working on that.

The material for the batons is a fair bit different to the older material - more flexible, slightly less fragile (also, doesn’t seem to have any wood in) so can be drilled straight through with the SDS without piloting, probably okay for the north and south wall, but the ceiling might be a bit more tricky.

*Possibly. Probably. Maybe.

Edit: Changed Drillbit size to 8mm.

Very impressive.
I have a SDS drill that I could probably bring to the space on Wednesday morning. I may possibly have some 6 drill bits. Not SDS ones but they’ll fit in the drill.

I tell a filthy lie, we need 8MM SDS bits, the one we had yesterday was a 160.

Ok, I’m buying 5. Anything else from screwfix while I’m on their site?

A few SDS chisel bits would be handy.

8 nm sounds big. We used 6.5 last time around?

Just make sure the hole is right for manufacturer’s instructions. Same for fitting method. We need to comply in order for it to satisfy the Network Rail certificate. On that point: if the fixings aren’t designed to have the plug hole drilled through the batten, then we need to think hard about using this method, and what the risks are. My recollection is that we were told we couldn’t use that method, as they weren’t ‘frame fixing’ type plugs. Worth checking though.

SDS was considered a pain when up ladders or staging last time… The Hitachi’s were great for drilling the brickwork. But might make sense.

The plugs didn’t go through the holes drilled by the 6.5mm bit we could find. Only fit in the 8mm hole. the only real use of the SDS was that it sinks though the brick like a hot knife though butter.

as for the other stuff, happy to go back to the predrilled then drill though method. Slightly more of a pain though.

Batten Fixing
Begin by securing AL-CB5025 WPC battens horizontally to the brickwork with AL-CBF65 fixings. For ceiling areas allow approximately 750mm between batten runs. Depending on the radius of the curve, the sheet length used and the sheet configuration the batten centres can be increased or reduce by up to 150mm in order to achieve even spacing. For side wall areas where greater rigidity is desired the batten spacing should be reduced to 600mm. Use either AL-CB5025 WPC battens and AL-CBF65 fixings behind plastic wall sheets or AL-WB4040 WPC battens and ALWBF80 fixings behind metal wall sheets. Both battens are supplied in 2.9m lengths. Use 7 fixings per 2.9m batten length to give max 500mm between fixing points. Start at the centre of the batten and work outwards to keep batten flat to the brickwork. Drill clearance holes through battens before fitting screws. Always use correct stainless steel

If the decision is to go back to the non SDS method, we don’t need those bits, but others.

Anything easily reachable will benefit from SDS. Worth a call to Rockwell to see if fixings can be used this way, and spec diameter of drill bits.

the only real difference here is whether the batton is in the way before drilling the hole in the brick. Either way we need a hole in the wall, and trial / error showed that size of SDS. Probably should be checked by someone cleverer than me though…

IMO, if the bit for the plug is used on the batten, then the hole will be to big. They have to be drilled separately.

IIRC, we used a batten with screws screwed through so you could bang each screw point onto the brick to mark the location of each plug hole.
