Laser'd Cantilever Box

Happy with my first laser cutter project : A Cantilever style sewing box.

Process :

  1. http://www.makercase.com to create the basic box shape.
  2. Imported into inkscape to straighten out the top edges and create flat lids.
  3. Added 2mm diameter circles for the precision bolt holes*
  4. Cut on 5.9mm ply, glued with some bog standard wood glue and clamped each box square.
  5. M2 19mm long nuts bolts and washers.
  • I had to have a little think and some GCSE maths to work out where to place the levers.

I’m just waiting delivery of some little hinges to complete the the top boxes and may add a little latch and possibly a handle.

Thanks for the members around on the weekend for tips and troubleshooting.

Looking great. Okay to use these images and link this for tomorrow’s open evening social media posts?

thanks. Yep of course!

Nice work!

That looks great Twm! how long did it take to cut?

Once I was happy with the drawing and settings it only takes <5mins to cut out . I had to repeat one or to sides as occasionally it didn’t punch all the way through.

that’s quick, looks great!

That looks really impressive! I have something a bit similar planned, and I remember learning at the induction that the laser cutter doesn’t make perfectly vertical cuts. Did that cause any problems in fitting your parts together? Are the joints flush?

thanks. yup, the joints are snug and square with ~6mm ply
