Laser meetup - Monday 10th April 19:30

Consider me interested but current job often makes it difficult to come to the space at a reasonable time mid week. I start a new rotation in April which may work out better.

Nice to see so much interest.

I’m interested specifically in using the hinge in leather design. But it most commonly used in acrylic and wood. So see below some random templates to try and formulas to experiment for tomorrow evening.

Cheers

For this project, we used a 50-watt Helix with the following settings:

Engraving: 100% speed, 100% power, 600 dpi, Jarvis dithering

Cutting: 25% speed, 100% power, 500 frequency

Adjust the settings for your laser and wattage using the suggested settings from the manual.

Open the file and modify the design as you would like.

Alas, work over-running so I won’t make it tonight. Happy lasering, and I’ll hope to join in next week…

Just realised this is tonight. Going to have to apologise as I have a report to finish for tomorrow but I should be able to make Monday the 10th if there is one planned.

We were pretty late off the mark but our first living hinge of the night was a business card holder, done on 3mm ply with power 100, speed 0.75, PPI 1000

Great work.

Could the laser working group maybe make some smallish things to put by the laser printer do we have some examples of what the laser cutter can do to show to visitors. It’s always a lot easier to explain what a machine can do with some visual aids. If you fancy.

I think that’s a good ideaas for tonight we have found that the laser can do multi way hinges (geodesic) and extra bendy hinges (bowling pin) but @StudioNelle likes to push them past their limit!

I’ve put the black acrylic ones on the window sill.

3mm acrylic
Power: 100
Speed: 0.85
PPI: 1000

The living joints didn’t work on either tests. I think when testing again I would use correct setting on PPI: 5000 and reduce power.

Sorry, it’s the big kid in me - glad the card holder survived!

Oh yes!!

We didn’t set how regular we wanted to run these sessions. I’m incredibly time poor so would suggest a fortnightly or monthly session. I will be in next Monday from 19:30 we can gather on the main table in the clean room with our laptops before moving to the laser.

I was fortunate to have @Esther_Gladstone to take my box manipulation skills to another level last week and wanted to continue practising these skills in making a lasercut version of this:

So if you have a box based project you would like to try come along from 19:30 on 10th April.

Cheers

I think fortnightly is great. Count me in for next Monday. I think I’m going to do an acrylic one of these…

Acrylic is a nice touch, I might need to upgrade mine to a acrylic version!

I’m coming but have to do a couple of things now so prob won’t be there til 8pm. See you all shortly!

I’m caught up with a report, not going to make it sorry :worried:

Hi guys,

Wondered anyone was interested in giving this ago again? I’ll be around this Monday I figured we could just test out various projects on the trotec website. The outcomes would include:
Adding more projects to the trotec blog
Record troubleshooting issues and solutions
Increase skills using laser cutter

If anyone is interested just I need to engrave some new business stamps and embossing stamps:

so we could do this using different materials to test results:
Rubber
Wood
Acrylic
Cork

If your interested please familiarise your self with these settings https://www.troteclaser.com/en-gb/knowledge/do-it-yourself-samples/engraved-stamp/ to get your file ready, then we can test cut from 7pm - 9pm.

@directors, I was wondered if our previous projects were added to the trotec blog?

No, but they should be if you can point to them and are happy to?

If anyone is keen on trying laser origami, I’d be keen to try that too!
