Sounds ace. Can I get three?
Indeed. I’ll let you know where they are when I grab them. Possibly this weekend, if not, next week definitely.
Brilliant. Thank you!
Well hey I live near a slate quarry in north Wales when I’m not in london. If you need stuff to experiment with let me know!
Oh and raster graphics are the opposite of vector, it is making up an image purely of the pixels, there is no mathematical rule that can be applied to a line or shape, and hence cannot manipulate selected elements of it. I hope that helps!

Welsh slate is lovely. We get some used tiles now and again too. Have been weathered and look amazing.
Thanks for trying to explain rastering. I think I need to hit YouTube and gorge on vids to drill it into my skull. At the moment I can’t seem to get my head around it!
Fortunately I’ve worked out how to laser what I need at the moment. If I move on to more advanced pieces I’ll definitely need to learn more in order to do them successfully.
Used the settings you sent me.
Chose Stone from the cutting default list and granite as the sub-material. Then set power at 34 and speed at 100. Unsure of the dpi. Whatever was the default for granite. Only did one pass. Gonna have another go today. Maybe drop the power and give it two passes. See if I can get a bit more depth to the etching. I scrubbed the slate a little and you lose some clarity. It gives it a nice little bit of character, but I worry you could lose the pattern completely over time if you don’t get it etched a little deeper.
Makerspace logo 2 passes at 20 power and 100 speed. Then went over it at 30/100 for 1 more pass.
Then tried my logos again at 34/100 for 2 passes this time. Came out lovely. More depth and sharpness to the finish.
First session of lasering slate… Thanks @DAC17 for the slate and @peter_hellyer for helping find inspiration.
Wow, looks awesome! If they need cutting out, best to use either a slate cutter like I had the other day or an angle grinder. Me and my bro are down on Thursday evening. He’s way more skilled with the cutters if you want him to have a go at cutting them for you?
Yeah, if you guys don’t mind. That would be ace.
Let us know where you’re leaving it and I’ll get him to cut them up for you.
It’s down the side of the sofa (the one near the bookshelf) in the carrier bag. Thanks loads.
Hey, didn’t manage to cut the slate for you. We did get it out, but the lines need to be on the other side of the slate for it to be cut correctly and we didn’t have time to transpose the lines to the underside.
The reason is to do with the cutters. They cut one side with a straight edge and the other with a slight slant. The slanted side is the decorative one. Cutting along the lines at the moment will give the picture-sides the sharp edge.
Long story short…can you copy the lines onto the other side and Shane will cut them out when down next?
No worries at all, thanks for trying. I will do that, and cut you in on the profits when geometric animal coasters engraved on slate become the next big thing.
Nicely done
