Just no!

Found this in electronics.

It is being disposed of!

Can I ask why?

It’s not mine, I haven’t been in today, but I would love to understand a bit more.
Just personal curiosity

Eh, don’t waste some good 18650s.

There are a few different things wrong with this, but the main thing is the DC barrel jack and wire have a relatively low current rating, while the batteries are capable of outputting much more current. In other words, if the jack was shorted or overloaded it could be a fire hazard. At the very least there should be an inline fuse (around 2A would be suitable).

When we found this it was connected to the lab PSU unsupervised. Batteries should always be charged through a BMS (protection) board, and under supervision.

Basically DIY battery packs are not allowed in the electronics area unless they have proper protection.

Oh! I have one of this!

In the industry is called “apprentice powered circuit finder with scream alarm”:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Thank you for the explanation Mia.

I always thought that those cells had a BMS circuit integrated in them, therefore intrinsically safe!

Glad to learn that they aren’t without setting fire to anything!

The ones with a battery nub on one end do, flat ended ones do not.
