It's getting hot in here

I’m not planning on taking off all my clothes in the makerspace, I am wondering if anyone has any good options for turning the heat down. I’ve been considering going to work at night and monitoring an open door to get a breeze through. It was 30C in the textile space and I was starting to feel really dizzy even though all I was doing was sitting down.

We hit 31 c yesterday :melting_face:.

I saw another thread about not wanting to put in more time and effort in case we need to move but would a portable air-conditioning help? There’s also something like through wall air-conditioning which would be an easier install if there is a space for it.

(I’ve spent so long looking for some sort of solution to my home with limited success)

You can’t get an AC unit at any price right now unfortunately. You’d also need a lot of oomph to cool the whole space. Those little portable ones are designed to handle a single room in a house, around 50-100m³ of air, but we have something like 500m³ in each arch (and considerable additional load from all the equipment).

We’re also effectively in a cave, so the temperature inside will match the temperature of the surrounding rock brick, which has tremendous thermal inertia. I bet it’s well up into the 20s by now.

Cross ventilation would really help though. In arch 1, there’s a timber panel in the back wall that was originally going to be a window. Arranging something openable up there would at least let the hot air out and draw fresh air in.

Most portable air conditioners also suck, literally. Anything without 2 hoses for intake and venting create negative pressure in the space they’re in and just pull in more hot air, which hugely reduces their efficiency.

Oh indeed. We’ve got one at home and I’ve built a strap-on plenum around the intake grille so I can duct it to outside. Makes a notable difference.

We could use about 10 more. I tried to order but having problmes with my card.
A very aestertically pleasing oscillating fan has been installed by the toilet. It does basically nothing.

x1 is in the clean room but could be moved to the sewing room if it doesnt help in the clean room. The other two units are going to go by each laser station.

As we only got 3 fans in the moment, would it not be fairer to put one in textiles/3d printing , one in the messy room and one in the clean room?

yeah, I know there is a hole at the back of textiles which does let in some air, it’s not very big and was recently letting in a lot of smoke. If we were able to do something like a fan which can draw air in or out that would be useful. So that we don’t get choked if the people behind decide to do another bonfire, and we don’t get overheated.

Sorry but my intention is to create some form of airflow in the messy room, for which one fan will not suffice. When both (air cooled) lasers are on they kick out a lot of heat and it becomes unbearable in there quickly. So my hope is that strategically placing the two fans at each end of the messy room will help to push air through the room.

As I said we should move the fan that’s in the clean room where it evidently doesn’t do anything, into the textiles room immediately.

Screwfix still has some stock available for delivery/collection, so I suggest the techs for each room message the directors requesting some budget be added to their cards and order some in ASAP.

The Fan in the clean room is working. Just need more fans in clean room.
3D print is ok for fans. I think it would just blow hot air around when the printers are printing.

I think the number one thing that’ll improve the comfort in the textiles room is new air being brought in rather than moving around the air that’s already in there

We could either run ductwork all the way to the front of the arch, or just extract from the currently blocked up space above the wimsew and let air be brought in passively from the clean room

Yesss. Joe figured out what needs to be done. Just need someone to go on top of the toilet to switch the fan around (for more air in) and add a fan to the hole in the wall (for air out)

I disagree with no fans in the textiles. We had two last summer, and they made a big difference. In the moment, the room is too hot and sticky. @textilestechs

idk I think we should have fans in textiles, if people need to cut-out lightweight fabrics they can be turned off for a little bit or use extra weights.

Last time I suggested having a fan in textiles while Sophia was present it was denied because of her allergies and kicking up dust. Unrelated to comfort or blowing fabric.
