It's 6pm and I'm ready to make! Too bad this is my view :(

I just arrived to do some making (3D Printing to be precise). Unfortunately this is what I arrived to. I’m just wondering. Is there a place on the forum for hours the space is open or at least likely to be accessible? I’d be happy to man the space at certain hours. I live close (Denmark Hill)

Will be there in 20 minutes

Hey josef,
the way we are working it at the moment is that you need to become familiar to other mermbers before you
get 24 hour access. When you get proposed and seconded by other members that know you then your fob can be updated. A person with 24 hour access needs to be there for the space to be “open”.

The easiest way I think to get proposed and seconded is to come along to “make the space” days, evenings when we are building the space and contribute that way (if you have been helping out well done). Its a good way of getting to know people and helping to build the space you want to use

next one might be tonight (have a look at discourse) and after that sat and maybe sunday

Thanks for the info! Got it.

Hi Josef,

We’re also trying to encourage members to say when they’re planning to be in the space. This serves several purposes: members who don’t have shutter access can get in, members who need to use power tools know that there’s at least a second member there, and…well we’re a social space, so it’s nice to go down and do a bit of co-working!

As Conor has hinted: getting involved in the construction or hosting an open evening is a great way to get engaged with the space, meet people…and have an influence on our future development. A couple of hours here and there are greatly appreciated.

Thanks @Dermot ! Question, will anyone be there this afternoon/evening, what time? I was thinking of coming along this afternoon/evening, preferably early. You see I am a freelancer and do most of my work in the evenings (late ish) so in the day I’m free. Shall I start a new topic of is there a specific place online or a forum thread where we can say if we’re going to be at the space?

Tonight is open night. I’ll be there from 7.

At the moment a new thread with the day and date in the title seems to be the best way… It keeps it within Discourse.

Any better solutions are very welcome.

I’m a web developer so was thinking about a particular solution but I wouldn’t want to over engineer something… I know how that can go down, I’ve done it enough to not do it any more  keep it simple, so if I have a simpler idea to have a way where people can just post when they will be at the space with perhaps the “shutter” people highlighted then that’s all we’d need, kinda like a calendar view… but as simple as entering a rough time frame (even something as simple as Morning/Afternoon/Evening and date then submit.

Well our Google calendar is available, but does that raise issues if we want to keep it viewable by members only?

Also the good feature of a post where you ask if anyone’s around is that it can prompt someone else to go decide to use the space, which has a good ‘community interaction’ feel.

What would be good is something like istheshutterdownattheslms.com - that just says if the shutter is up or down and that’s all. That’d save people making the trip, then standing around in the cold prodding people on discourse hoping to be let in - and indeed prevent those local with access from feeling obliged to let people in at a moment’s notice.

Doesn’t need to be complicated… doesn’t even need to be automatic to begin with.

We have got some read switches for doing this

Well, I can see the membership system has the events for shutter controls being “activated”, but that doesn’t tell me if that’s up or down … but if we did know that it’d be pretty easy to build something that could be put on the membership system homepage (or something!) that displayed the up/down shutter status.

That was the plan , fit the switch and mod the software

Can this be designed so only members see when shutters are open?

Yes, as door log is presently.

I’d have thought the easiest thing to do would be make an app in the membership system which is only available to members that does this.

It’s a bit meta, but was thinking of coming to the space today to look at this (and/or a project of my own) - will anyone be about ?

I’m going to be there in 20 mins till 11:15, and I think others might be down too

Possibly @Barnaby_Coote?

I will do the hardwhere when I re make the border box

The membership system is already written to be able to handle this and the hardware is in the space somewhere to be fitted.

The fitting it and writing the code are the bit’s missing.
