Is this woodworm?

Started to plane the walnut board and revealed these …is it woodworm? Hoe can you tell if it’s still active? Should I treat it?

Plan was to use the board as coffee table, so have concerns treating with nasty chemicals will make it unusable in a living room or kitchen environment.

Definitely woodworm, I encountered some in my pieces.
One particularly bad piece I quarantined and left outside, checking up on it had a load of little beetles running about…
All other pieces seemed fine despite little burrows but I guess it’d be hard to tell immediately but I don’t think that they’re active… I would say microwave to be safe but that board would be a little large… Walk in freezer would be another method to be sure to kill them.
Else mark the ALL spots and keep an eye for any further developments - probably bagging the piece somehow so they can’t roam about.
Not had to treat anything before but can’t imagine this would affect it’s use as a coffee table given there will be a solid layer of finish over the top.

Yep definitely woodworm.

Is this in the space ? If so there is a danger of all the wood that is stored there getting attacked.

If you don’t want to go the chemical spray route the only way to get rid is by fumigation.

We used to use methyl bromide gas .

Highly toxic in gas form, smells unpleasant but wood is safe after treatment.

Other option is to burn it!

I’ll come in tomorrow to bag it and seal it airtight with tape until I can get the chemical spray.

Can I get away with just spraying the affected areas or does it need to be sprayed all over?

The gas sounds like a less intrusive remedy but doesn’t sound like you can buy it off the shelf ?

Burn : (

Sprayed all over ,

Methyl bromide gas is what we used when I worked for rentokil, can only be done professionally

That’s what they said about the industrial weedkiller used to nuke my garden…

Ordered Boron, from link below, all the other woodworm treatments have that nasty chemical Permethrin which is hazardous to pets and fish.

Have you had any experiences with Boron?

My concern is the table top will live in a living room

I’ll wrap it in cling today and apply boron Friday evening.
