Is PU Leather laser-safe?

@lasertechs is this a laser-safe product?

The leather is PU Leather and the ever helpful website seems to contradict itself:

“our laser engravable PU leather flask is the perfect choice for expressing your heartfelt sentiments”

“Please note - Due to fumes of PU leather it is NOT recommended to engrave on this product.”

I’m not a lasertech, and not a chemist - correct me if i’m wrong - but rule of thumb for burning plastic under low temperature/oxygen condition it releases unoxidised chunks of what it’s made of. For that reason for example you avoid PVC - it releases chlorine.
A brief glance on PU formula on wikipedia tells you it’s based on urethane −NH−(C=O)−O− where N-C link is cyanide. So that would be a small part of what’s released in fumes. How unhealthy it is depends on concentration…

Depends what you’re planning on doing with it. If you’re engraving it you should be okay just ensure its on a low power setting so no flames are created, 1 because it will destroy your product and 2 to negate the build up of flame and potential damage to the laser

The fabrics I cut have PU backings on them and its widely regarded as laser friendly, just as long as you’re not burning it and letting it smoulder away creating fumes. However i’ve never used a PU leather before so may have a differnt composition to what im experienced with.

As with all laser cutting I would always recommend letting the fumes completely exhaust for a minute before opening the lid - Furtunately our laser has an excellent fume extraction solution!
