Help making a wooden tool please

Hi all,

I wondered if anyone would be able to help me recreate a stitching pony used for sewing leather. I have previously made a couple of these

However I used a screw bolt and washer to secure it shut which wears down before needing to be replaced. Any ideas on how to improve this simplistic stitching pony. I considered a clamp closure like this:

We can laminate some wood over a form and cut it in half and fix it together .

Will be fun , will try and find some ash or something a bit springy
