I’m no expert but this definitely doesn’t look right. Nor have I the slightest clue how someone could manage this…
Are there spare tips or is a new iron neccessary?

I used the one on the right yesterday (FYI it was dirtier when I started to use it) The one on the left was used by Daniel but it was like this when he start using it if I remember correctly.
usually when the initial coating on a tip is damaged, solder erodes away the metal beneath it.
There were more tips in the component draws, cannot recall where and if they were for the hakko specifically.

A new tip on it’s own is no use here. The knackered tip is stuck in the outer metal tube. That happened to the other iron as well. You won’t get it out without wreaking the outer metal tube.
The only practical option is to order a complete new handle from Hong Kong for about $20.
As far as I have found, the metal tube is not available on it’s own for a non-ludicrous postage cost (and probably VAT on a package from the USA).
We have loads of spare tips but once an iron has been in use for a month they can’t be changed.
This is really weird because we have these same irons at work and they’ve never had any issues with them getting stuck in the tool.
I’m in Chicago at the moment. If it’s something available in a store (like Fry’s) i may be able to pick one up before i leave on Saturday. Send me a link to what you’re looking for.
It is still in the same state
Shall I just get another handle and send in a recipt? Decision from the @electrotechs please.
PS thanks David, did not find a non-mail order source.
Just a thought - could it be a shout to upgrade/get a better model? We seem to often need to replace parts on this.
For example - I have a ps-900 and do a lot of soldering for work and the difference between it and the hakko is light and day. Everyone who has used it has commented the same - it makes soldering way more pleasant and efficient.
Heats up in less than 10 seconds (literally) and puts out an immense amount of heat at the correct temp because of some clever technology. Plus the tips can be easily swapped even when hot and last a very long time.
I bought one second hand - e.g available for £94 here - plus maybe £20 for a couple of tips.
I could say the same about my soldering iron at home and work, the issue isn’t the iron in my opinion it’s about how people use them.
These irons aren’t bad units, they don’t take more than a few seconds to heat up and have a good amount of power, sure they’re possibly not as good, but throwing out relatively new and working irons because people keep destroying the tips isn’t going to solve the problem in my view.
Totally agree on this one.
Stop leaving the iron on , leave it with some solder on the tip when you shout it down.
+1
At home I made the mistake a couple of time (long time ago now) to leave my iron on and killed a few tips, the pain of buying new one because you made a mistake is sufficient to teach you a lesson and avoid making the mistake again. However the makerspace structure decouple this responsibility from people using the facility.
Just a thought on a electronic project: the hot air thingy turn off when it’s put back into it’s holder so if the soldering iron will be fixed to the electronic bench it should be relatively simple to put a proximity sensor behind it and turn off the iron with a time out if not moved and similarly turned on when picked up
We could wire them into one of these:
I think we should get a new handle, lets get the soldering Iron up and running again (its a staple part of the electronics area). I also think we should protect that investment by sorting out some sort of timer- not to mention the obvious fire safety improvements it has! @directors can we have some money for this? I guess £100 should cover it, thoughts anyone?
Yes, of course – we did talk about a throw switch for the whole electronics bench at one time…
Any way the old tips can be removed? Heating/freezing? It seems nuts that a stuck on tip is causing this the whole handle to need replacing
I have a spare soldering iron we can use for now I can drop it off tomorrow if desired?
Are none of the irons working?
We have a couple that are working (I just powered them up and cleaned them) and the broken Hako seems to have had its tip and tube removed. is someone ordering spares for it or let me know and i’ll do it ?

Yesterday I tried to blowtorch the tip and the tube , no success , so I did throw it way.
