Group ZipVan membership?

The ideal solution is anyone who is a member of Makerspace can drive our Zipvan at Makerspaces expense, I presume they won’t allow that?

Nice work

This sounds like option 1?

n.b. can someone using an actual computer fork this thread to keep the OP on track?

great work Conor!
thats good progress.

10 Drivers might be enough to cover us?

Can those who don’t make the 10 free list pay the additional charge themselves so they are able to use it also?

seems like we could get it working after a pphone call.
maybe worth checking:

  • is difference between “partnership” and “business account” purely terminology. or are there some other implications?
  • it comes with ten free accounts. how much are additional accounts?

option one sounds good for overheads and ease of use. if the addtional accounts arent that expensicve could be worth a punt. ten drivers would be freaking useful any how.

actually yes, i think so, but i dont think we can have a mix of some paying through makerspace account and some through their own

I don’t think we would necessarily make the distinction and just cover the cost, but I recon 10 would probably cover us easily.

In any case, this should go on the agenda for next weeks meeting to make a firm decision about moving forward with it.

we need an interim solution, ideally starting today, to help people move stuff they lent the space for construction, out of the clean space and not back into the snug. considering the pretty low exposure, depending on contract, this is prob something a trustee can just make a decision on for now?

could this actually be set up and ready to use by this evening?

yes

It isn’t clear if after 1 year we end up paying £600 a year for those original 10 people or if they remain free?

As a zipcar/van member for years I can see the benefits of using them but there are a few pitfalls I can see when it is applied to an organisation such as slms.

Corporate membership.
10 members billed to company card.
Problem
Tracking the usage and making sure it is only used for makerspace business.

Also there are the hidden costs.
If you have an accident in a zipcar your membership is suspended until fault is apportioned.
The damage excess is £750 unless you purchase a damage waiver @£99 pa or £15 per month.per member (I believe you can only purchase a waiver one being a member for one year without accident)

Likewise with fines for speeding, bus lane etc offences they will add the fine immediately on to the billing credit card.

Sorry to put a downer on this idea!
But if we have enough members within the space who already are members of zipcar would it not make sense to use them and allow them to claim back the cost through makerspace?
And give them a @ name so people can contact all of them at once.
@truckers maybe?

My gut feeling is this is a better solution. Less risk.

the partnership deal, seems to be a possible answer to hidden costs, individuals pay using individual accounts, but get free membership (first year at least).
I described this previously after ringing them.
How about we decide what our ideal deal would be and then get someone to ring them back, we have alot of conflicting/reoccuring ideas

My spin on a “downer” would be.
And on each thread there is usually one downer that stops things from happening. And gets us back to square zero.
Instead let’s be brave, see them as good points worth noting and being aware of and do something positive. Write a driver agreement that people sign when they become a driver that covers these points.

We can trust people not to abuse the system for personal use. If it was only ten peeps it would be obvious. There’s loads of tools lying around a lot easier to steel than a van hire and no one nicks those.

It would be useful to have.

If some gets a ticket or a fine no problem. It gets paid instantly by the card. It’s obvious who did it and they pay for the fine out of their own pocket back to SLMS. This is agreed to when you sign up to be a @driver. If they don’t they get taken off van duty and what ever else directors want to do.

Worst case seneario and some one crashes a van and we need to pay £750 excess. Think we suck it up. It won’t happen and if it does the person was driving for SLMS.

Can’t see any of these as reasons not to do this. But good points that need agreement before going for it.

Let’s not bottle out because of not trusting members and maybe some one will have a crash.

Have plans for the worst case sinareo. Don’t live by them.

I think the various conflicting ideas come from not knowing what we are doing this for.

If it’s for Makerspace, we’ve pretty much done the bulk of the work needed for the space which would need this. However if it’s for personal use and projects then this is a very different propersition and the partnership is perfect. Except I’m not clear how after the first ten people for a year, how this is better than a normal membership.

hey
havent been following the thread, but got a follow up email

Ooooh

Did some one say free trial? For three months!

Those are free (minus all the time to fill out the stuff and give them all your credit card details and a tiny piece of your soul and I’m guessing the hourly rate isn’t free)
but!
Apart from that they are free. And they’re a trail.

Long term zipvan may not be the perfect solution but its a good solution.
