I’ve got a little project I was hoping to try and play about with next week and try and get out of work one afternoon to actually get down the space and make something!
I want to install a little speaker in a wine bottle, but I need to chop the base off the bottle.
Does anyone have such a jig made already I could borrow or try at all? Otherwise do we have a glass cutter I could try mounting onto a piece of scrap that timber to score the bottle?
Easiest way with home tool, use a string soaked in acetone placed on the bottle light up the string wait a bit and dip in cold water. Other way are explained in that video but require specific glass cutting material
wicked dudes! Thanks for the post @laurent_muchacho too. I’ve seen the acetone example, but I need a super precise cut, because I think I’ll need to 3d print or laser cut a replacement bottom that glues up nicely without a visible join. @Dermot I might just nip to screw fix and get a cheap cutter, that way I can try and permanently install it in a jig if anyones wants it afterwards. And yep, it’s just the end cap, I still want it to look like a wine bottle but with a speaker in it’s base.
Speaking to a guy who nearly got involved in a project making bottles into lamps. He said glass cutters that grind a safe edge are available. £100 ish. So probably not worth for a one off.
hey! so I’m still struggling to get some clean edges, the stress points keep unaligning and I even tried buying a bottle cutter off amazon, so think I’m going to spend some time in the makerspace and try a few things out. @joeatkin2 do we have a diamond wet wheel in the space I could try?
Yes I have put mine in the space it needs a good clean and a bit of attion I had lent it to someone and it is supposedly cutting out properly a clogging fsn or something the blade is a bit strong but should be ok if you go slow. When are you looking to do it ? And i will give it a clean and see if there is anything wrong with it
ok cool, I was thinking of doing this tomorrow as I have the day and evening free. I’ll need supervision as I’ve not used this type of equipment before. Happy to get some food or beers in for an hour or so for help to see if it works.
