Ghoul gun

Last weekend I finished off a print of the Ghoul’s pistol from the new Fallout TV show as part of a cosplay for the upcoming London MCM comic-con.

I printed everything using silver silk PLA. For the wooden sections I spray painted them brown, then mimicked a wood grain effect using a wide brush and a slightly darker shade applied lightly across it. And for the metal sections I experimented with a couple of different ways to make it look weathered. What ended up working was using some shoe polish applied lightly across the surface.
Then I used some of the gloss lacquer at the space to give everything a consistent finish.
If I had more time and money I think I could do better, and I think sanding and polishing the metal sections before applying the shoe polish would have been a little better, but I’m pretty happy with the results.

BTW the design was taken from here.

That’s a very cool print!

Big Fallout fan here!

Nice work.

Binged the series after initially abandoning it at ep1. Quite enjoyed working out the various (mysterious) Easter eggs.

I made another one.

Nice. The wood and metal effects look really good. It would be a lot heavier, but you could also make handles with real wood using the CNC and carving that part of the stl. I guess you might also find some steel tube that is close enough in size to use as the barrel. The metal parts might also be done on the CNC - e.g. use aluminium and electroplate it or use the Sieg when it becomes operational. If you have a firearms license, then….

BTW, action props look much more realistic in use if they have suitable weight - it effects how it handles and moves and makes a significant difference to whether it appears authentic or fake. If 3d printing consider making it so that it can be filled with e.g. plaster to add that weight. You’ll be surprised how much it can add to the illusion of being real.

I like the idea of filling it with plaster, or at least the barrel. There’s supposed to be a mechanism in the central section so I can move the handle around, but it snapped off. Replacing that with wood/metal/a thicker print would be beneficial.
Thanks for complimenting the wood and metal effects, but I think there are some improvements I could make there if I do it again. For instance there’s some gunmetal spray paint I’d like to use if I make another one in the future that I think will help with the finish.

I’m happy enough with it for now at least, but I’m noting that all down for the next comiccon costume.
