Free Wood!

Someone from an exhibition at Barge House, Oxo Tower on Southbank phoned the space yesterday with an offer of free wood.

They have an exhibition closing and will have a load of wood to dispose of.

Free wood available on Monday 18th July between 10:00 and 18:00.

Kind note: Please do not bring any more wood into the space. We have enough!

Collecting wood for your own uses is fine, of course

We have a lot of really really crappy bits of reclaimed fast grown pine that are rotten, split, full of nails and not much good for anything.

If they are giving away ply panels those could be useful for building all the storage we need.

If we can have an idea of what they have to donate perhaps we could go through all the scraps and chuck the unuseable stuff in the hippo bag, and take a few panels of good ply off them. This won’t take much space, we have a storage place planned for it in messy and it would be a lot more useful to us than the rubbish we have collected at present

I think I might phone them tomorrow or pop down there on my way home to see what they have.

Initially I was thinking for myself, but if there is some support I agree. Some good timber would be good for the space.

Plus now the snug is “sorted” (as in tidied not finished) and the first room decided to make itself the wood stoor, we have a much better idea of what we have. We could use it as a limiter. Eg nothing gets put in there if there’s no space. It about 95% full at the moment. But if you can swap out / upgrade on a like for like basis this could work.

Howard and I where discussing a visit (post recon) if there looks like good stuff.

Sounds great. Ply and any hardwoods would be great. Tell me when you think you’d be going.

How about we make an area for wood we have that we are going to throw out, leave it for a few days just in case and then we chuck it in the hippo bag. I can go through it at some point to sort the good from the bad. Then we could go and collect the new stuff

Personally, I think nobody would miss anything if you threw it away today.

I’m having difficulty finding useable scraps to be honest

i hate the pile

Yep. I’d much rather see that space taken up by member’s wood for making actual projects

Going against the grain (wood joke), there’s a few projects that need finishing. Cnc cabinet, cutsaw table, storage(?), a few other I can’t remember.

This wood could be great for sme of those.
Now It’s in that small room in the snug, it’s
Totally controllable and out of site.

I say keep it as a wood store for now, and use what we can on the rest of construction.

We can rethink when we are finished stage 2. Rested. And ready to take on phase 3.

If any of it is going to be thrown out I would like it and will store in my attic.

So pls let me know before chucking.

You should be able to find them now. And get to them. Have a look when you get time.

I am also on the wood hunt (though it’s more a thinking about a wood hunt) for making a shelf for my desk so my screens can be at the right height (have the shelf, just need some wood for raising the shelf, so if you were to discard any 2x4 or 1x2 type stuff, I would be interested in helping to “dispose” of it.

…I’ve got a lead on sourcing some regular reclaimed wood. More details if it pans out…

ive emailed them and waiting for a reply…

…booked monday off just incase its a good lead…

…thinking of getting there at 10am if they open at that time. first come first served me thinks.

Great. I can’t make it I’ll be away for work that day, but I’d be interested to know what you find.

…no reply from the email…

…but im going there at 4 today to do a recon, take some photos blah…

…ive booked mpnday off to pick up just incase its “good stuff”.

Just been to oxo tower.
They have a ton of wood. A lot more than we (or I) need.
Pics below.

It’s a group of art students doing there end of term projects. Some of the art and most of the wood is available.

There’s no “nice” wood. But, a lot of construction wood. (Excuse my rubbish technical words for wood).

There is car is access. And space for a van if we need it.

Should be able to get there for 12.

What we gonna do?
