Hi Makers,
I was in the space last night and I couldn’t figure out what to do with my food waste, is this case just a couple of tea bags.
The two bins in the kitchen seem to be a recycling bin and a landfill bin but no food is allowed.
I probably just missed it, but do we have a food waste solution in the space?

I assume that’s a typo? We did talk about a food waste bin, then the talk spun off into wormeries and composting…
For the moment food goes in the main metal bin in the kitchen. We should put a sticker over the ‘no food waste’ line.
No at the last meeting it was agreed wed get a small food waste bin for the kitchen.
I meant ‘wood waste bin’ was a typo!
Okay, July’s meeting. Also says ‘sharps bin’.
Who was to action that? And when it’s full where does the food waste go, and how are sharps to be dealt with?
I was going to get the link to the sharps bin to Tom and Tom was going to sort out the food waste with first mile as they can do smaller bags.
Oh, but we’ve planned to move to Quantum: or have we??? Definitely some unexplained vacillation going on so I’m going to duck out of waste talk, I’ve found recent discussions confounding — for the moment food waste goes in general waste bin in kitchen, and that’s what members need to know for now.
We can’t switch to Quantum because they only do wood and food recycling and so we will always need first mile for mixed and electrical recycling, ERP for batteries, and Quantum for general waste.
The issue with using quantum for food is that we will need to store up 10kg of rotten foods before we can make good use of it where as first mile bags are 2.5kg.
I really think this this is a misunderstanding…I’m pretty sure Quantum handle all standard recycling. wouldn’t have been much point speaking to them in the first place otherwise.
Of course it’s possible they’ve changed their business model since then.
My understanding is that only stuff they compost is food and non-contaminated wood, the rest gets sorted and sold on, or treated as waste if it can’t be recycled.
I think we need to centralise this. We’ve now had at least four different members contacting Quantum, and all coming away with different impressions. I’m happy to take it on again — I’m sure a couple of phone calls can get this straightened out.

It would be great if you are taking it on if we can get some locked down answers, as my understanding and what Pete and Tom separately seemed to agree was that we needed:
Javier specifically said Quantum don’t do mixed recycling when I asked him, he specifically said they only offer two services general waste which is burnt (probably for energy generation) or food waste for composting which is also for certain types of wood.
I used to deal with this stuff but when I left as director you guys left me the impression you wanted it to be a directors responsibility, but ever since then frankly it’s been abandoned which is why members have been intervening, if you do take it on it should be as an @role for facilities not as director, we just had a meeting saying we were going to try and devolve powers further not rely on directors all the time.
Not been abandoned, but taken up erratically by members. I was doing fine with it: and was clear about how it was going to work, then somehow it fell into a gap between you and @boldaslove. We need consistency, is all I’m saying.
Yep, let’s not get into that again but 100% agreed, what I am saying is let’s make it an @facilities responsibility.
Not really interested in taking on a another role! Offering to take back a task that members showed an interest in and then dropped. A lesson perhaps that it needed to be clearly someone’s responsibility.
You’ve misunderstood me, I am suggesting this could form a part of an @facilities role we advertise to members.

Have we run out of first mile general waste bags? I’ve just emptied the bin and can’t find any anywhere.
I put a half roll of them in the kitchen with the red ones. If they’re all gone we can switch to clear ones from woodwork. They’re a bit huge, but will do for now
