Electronics evening 27 Oct?

Hi
Is it on tomorrow? Wanted to bring Sam down, my 13 year old.
Kim

I plan to be there. Though I will be twisting your arm for a MIG welding workshop!

Daniel, thank you so much for guiding Sam at the electronics evening. He really enjoyed learning with you. I can’t bring Sam along for a couple of weeks as Thursdays are busy but we’ll be back! Will let you know what we will need to get MIG going soon as I’ve gathered the info. Kim:slight_smile:

Cool! I plan to be in every Thursday this side of Christmas so hope to catch up at some point for more kitchen sink action!

For starters to get that MIG welder working we will need;

  1. Gas bottle of Argoshield (Argon, CO2, bit of Oxygen) - price varies according to size. Supplied by BOC online http://www.boconline.co.uk/en/products-and-supply/industrial-gases/shielding-gases/argoshield/argoshield.html
Maybe a local car place that could supply it and you can get cylinders in various sizes - first purchase can be expensive with the big cylinders which you refill. The type of Argoshield we buy will depend on thickness of steel we want to weld. Argoshield Light is for thinner steel.

  1. Wire - go for small 0.8mm mild steel - I didn’t open up the welder to see how much wire there was. We should also check the tip size is correct as we may need tips. Screwfix supply wire and tips.

  2. Leak detector spray to check gas pipe and any joints - no risk if there are leaks as the gas is inert but we’d be wasting gas!

I can be in again on Thursday 8 December if any MIG fans want to join me. We can check the condition of the nozzle, how much wire there is and the tips. If anyone else wants to fiddle in the meantime, let me know what you discover!

Any thoughts? Can do some extra research re the gas cylinder to get but you’ll have to let me know about finances!

I’ve got an account with BOC for the gas, but haven’t gotten around to ordering it yet. I can hand the details out if needed?

Let me know what time on the 8th, I would like to try and be there. Thanks for this.

Thanks @kimmik! I plan to be in on the 8th and will have a preliminary look this evening. @peter_hellyer can SLMS cover the gas?

I will join you having a look later Daniel. You still going to play with the Arduino tonight tho?

Great stuff! The MIG preliminary inspection should be quick then back to electronics evening is what I had in mind.

What needs looking at on the mig? It has a pretty full reel of wire, in it maybe 15-20kg?

Well thats great - I just hadn’t opened it up to check the wire and tip. So all we need is the gas and leak detector spray. I’ll leave it with you to order as you have an account with BOC. Daniel, you could take a look tonight at the wire just to check what mm it is, but sounds like Peter has done that. If we have the gas by the 8th, we could set the MIG up and check it works. Then we’d be good to go for a training session on another date. Start collecting mild steel scrap!
