DUAL turntable repair/refurb

I’m currently attempting to fix up a DUAL CS 505-1 turntable for a friend. It’s been sitting unused for 20 years and R1 on the switch-plate smokes after a few seconds when turned on. I’ve posted to a specialist forum on this (https://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=124139&p=1119965#p1119965) and I’m making some progress but just thought I would run it by here in case anyone with experience/knowledge of these things is able to input.

Thanks!

I have a 505 too, although I don’t know if it’s the first generation. As we just moved house, it’s about to emerge after 20 years in the loft, and I was thinking of resurrecting it.
Hence - following this topic to see how you get on!

Haha great. Thanks David :grinning:

Leaky caps are usually a good place to start! Good news is the electronics seem pretty simple:

Can you read the values off the original ones? I usually just order off Aliexpress and wait a couple weeks…

Thanks Andy

These are the orgiinal capacitors

Switch protection capacitor (C1) – Rifa PME265MB510 0.01uF
Motor start capacitor (C2) – Rifa PME271M633 0.33uF
Motor start capacitor (C3) – Rifa PME271M568 0.068uF

Attached are some images. As you can see they look very cracked which appears to be a sure sign that they need replacing.

A post I found from 2012 (http://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=54267) lists these as alternatives -

C1 - Rifa PME264NB5100M
C2 – Rifa PME271M633KR30
C3 – Rifa PME271M568MR30

  • which do seem to be available still but perhaps there are other (better) options also.

What do you think?

This is from the service manual. Are the percentages tolerances?

5

These are Y and X capacitors, Rifa are notorious to be very bad, especially in old equipment, some of this are just filtering caps across the main voltage, jus replace them with equivalent ones

The percentage it’s tolerance, yes

Thanks Andrea

Yes that seems to be the general consensus re Rifa.

The nearest match appears to be Kemet as sold through Farnell or RS. Do you know anything about that brand?

Kemet it’s good

Great thanks Andrea.

I will contact Mouser as they stock the ones I need and sell them individually and without handling charge. They delivery charge is quite steep but I am hoping that I might be able to get around that by picking up in person when passing one day in the not too distant future.

Any other suggestions most welcome!
