Donate Parts to the 3D area: Voron Switchwire

Evening All,

@3dprinters

We are currently undertaking a switchwire conversion for one of the printers previously donated to the space. (thanks again @shawaj) This machine is destined to be one that can be used with some more ‘fun’ filaments that we don’t normally allow through the Bambu’s or Voron 2.4. Think wood filled filaments, Conductive metal filaments, basically anything you are told not to use in the inductions! we will be upgrading this over time and there is a potential to go full high-end engineering filaments for it in the future. Think PEEK, HIPS and other spicy filaments.

The printer has already been unofficially christened Mary.

We are hopefully building the next stage on the 10th of Sept. Current deadline is the end of October to stay on theme.

We would like to get this up and running ASAP and are hoping people can help sourcing the additional components we need. If anyone has any of the below items, please let us know below if you are happy to donate them. Hopefully will save us some pennies and clear out some of your old stock.

  • Donations towards the tool head £85 low target £300 high target details below.

Thanks in advance,

@3Dtechs

My whole machine is currently designed to use M5 bolts. What does BHCS stand for? Button head counter sunk?!

Button head cap screw. Hex bolts basically

Morning Everyone,

@3dprinters

Just nudging this up the list. If anyone has any of the parts above to donate, please message below.

Alternatively, if anyone would like to send some cold hard cash to the cause, I have made a temp item on the filament dropdown so you can donate to the cause. (Switchwire Donation - £5) At moment I think the goal would be £200 to get us to a base, operational model but the sky is the limit with this one so please chip in as much or as little as you can afford!

All the best,

@3dtechs

What are the wattage requirements for the PSU? I have a 70W 5V PSU from TDK-Lambda I can bring over.

Same for acrylic, I have a couple of 480x540 and 480x270 3mm transparent sheets I am unlikely to use.

Hi Max,

Thank you for the offer, Thats a bit bigger than we need but it may well still work. PLus might give us some extra headroom if we need it. The BOM calls for a rs-25 PSU. Let me see if it will fit in the cad model.

I’ll also get the panel dims for the acrylic. of the top of my head though these would be plenty big enough

https://product.tdk.com/en/search/power/switching-power/ac-dc-converter/info?part_no=RWS100B-5 RWS100B-5 is the model, link should have a model and drawings.

I have M5 -16mm bolts, but they are countersunk heads. Got some others that have socket button heads. HMU when you want them, if any work.

Thanks Ed. sorry I got waylaid last time you mentioned them!

Afternoon all,

@3dtechs

Thank you to everyone who has physically or financially donated so far.

The Y and Z linear rails have all been installed and the and Y carriage has been belted up. Ran out od some harware so will need a top up. (@ed_o those M5 x 16 button heads would be grealty areciated if they are still up for grabs!)

The final big decision for us now id the toolhead for the machine. The techs are leaning towareds a Revo system wich will put the possibility of nozzle changes more into the hands of the users. There are alot of options we have here, kts start at around £85 for a single nozzle starter setup. The nice thing with this system is that there are options for all the spicy things I have alluded to in the past. They have a kit for around £300 which is ultra high temp up to 400c as well as a non-planar printing nozzle. (most interesting thing until we make a 5 Axis machine!

For anyone who would like to donate towards this, the donation link is still open on the shop. the more we get towards this the more advance the machine will be once its up and running.

@directors - A possible match maybe?

All the best,

Sam

@scday94 - you’ll be able to find a small pack of, hopefully enough, M5 16mm hex socket button head bolts by the Bambu printers from Sunday evening

Progress report on the switchwire:

The main bed is now mounted and the x axis gantry is now taking shape. Also the main pus has been wired into the machine. We are getting ready to run the main belts, and the counterweight system and install the rest of the electronics. The we can cut all the electronics enclosure panels and begin preparing parts for the hot end. Thanks to @stefanoromano for the help with the mains wiring.

Don’t forget to donate to the cause on the shop page.

Another little bit of a progress update.

The 24V and 5V power supply are now in their final place and permanently installed.
Both mains and signal wiring is done with the exception of the top end.
After a couple of hours and approximately 2 and a half TONS of tiny cable ties, now the wiring loom is stable and tidy.
@scday94 I beg you, can we find a longer ribbon cable for the display? So we can route it properly? Leaving like that hurts my brain!
