Hi there! I’m in the process of remaking an old project and it requires a hole to be cut into the box tube for cable runs. The last time I used a plasma cutter, I was able to achieve clean angles like this. However, I’m not sure if the one in the space is compatible with the plasma cutter. If not, I’d love any other suggestions you may have for a similar effect as this! Thanks - Xach
You can certainly use a plasma cutter but ours is handheld and may not produce the cleanest results. You can do the usual thing of drilling a hole for each corner and cut between them with an angle grinder or rotary tool. We have a mini milling machine that could probably cut the straights too for a bit of perfection but check with @metaltechs if the machine is in working order for the task. For corner work, you may just have to use a small square or triangle hand file.
Depending on the clearance inside the box section a jigsaw and metal blade might also work. I’ve used the cheap Bosch T118A blades for a similar cut and they go through 3mm mild steel very easily (they also do a more expensive T118AHM version for stainless).
I don’t think there’s a jigsaw in the metalwork area though, so only really an option if you have one handy at home you don’t mind getting a bit oily.
we actually do have both the jigsaw and metal blades for it in the metal area
