Cushion seam repair - help!

One of the cushion covers on my sofa is about to break. I didn’t take a photo of the damage, so here’s a wonderful sketch:

As far as I can tell, the seam was never made with a folded edge, so the innermost run of stiches only had a few strands of weave to hold them in. It only took 1 “delicates” wash cycle to completely knacker it.

Is there some sort of non-invasive reinforcement that I can glue/iron on to the back of this seam to prevent it disintegrating completely? A quick google shows lots of that tape that you iron inside a hemmed edge…

Despite the beautiful sketch, I’m struggling to make sense of it. Any chance of getting a photo on?

There is this but I don’t know how good it is. http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/impex-hi-tack-fray-stop-glue-60ml/567213-1000

 it was a brave attempt!

There used to be two pieces of fabric sewn together with two runs of stitching. Now, there are two very ragged frayed edges, held together by only one line of stitching, and a good tug on either side would probably separate the whole lot.

I’ll get a photo up later.

(That Fraystop glue looks the business, but the right time for applying it was before the fray happened!)

is it wrong to suggest gaffa tape along the entire inside seam?

It’s never wrong to offer gaffer tape. But in my experience it tends to lose its stick after a few years.

Is there enough unfrayed fabric to use the overlocker? Otherwise maybe gaffer tape might be where it’s at…

I would try trimming, overlocking and doing another set of stitches. But @StudioNelle knows much more about mending stuff than me and might have better ideas?

Chanelle - are you in the space tonight or tomorrow night? I’d like to get your opinion

Seconded on using the overlocker to fix that, it’s just going to fray even more if you try and stitch it.

I’m in tonight - not tomorrow

At a glance I think someone may already said over lock. Making it oh so slightly smaller, but a cushion will just look slightly more buff?

I’ll have a look at the overlocker before I leave, as I believe the needles are bent.

sorry I just received this notification, I think you posed this question a day ago.

It’s already pretty tight on the seat cushion, so I’m wary of making it any smaller.

I was in John Lewis oxford st. yesterday and they have a huge haberdashery dept. I found some iron-on repair tape which looks pretty good. Will report back!

Iron on tape is good for a bit but invariably comes apart in my experience, it’s more useful for holding things in place while you sew them than a long term fix.

I think that would be a very temporary solutiin. Another alternative would be to repair it by hand with a blanket stitch.
