Ok, are we looking in to shelving in phase 1 and also phase 2 as I’m sure this applies there too when its complete. We need to store things like oscilloscopes, 3d printers, desktopCNC?, bench power supplies and all the other equipment that is needed in that area.
Table tops full of test equipment and tools is getting to me and I know other members as well have commented on this.
the policy should be if you need to use it you take it out and pack it away after you done.
a shared work shop should be left clear and you need to account for setup time when you come into work.
I agree with Rob and am not sure where the anti-CNC feeling has emerged from. I don’t consider the Shapoko a suitable substitute.
@Marco_Pagliari we probably need shelving. But at the moment there’s a lot of shelves in the back unused. So maybe it’s more an issue of labeling shelves in the back and creating a culture where people put things back on them.
If we have shelves in the front let’s do them nicely, rather than any old bits of wood and some ugly brackets.
Some strong deep shelves on the phase 1 side of partition wall between phase 1 and phase 2 (on the side that isn’t the kitchen) would be great. It’s going to be a happy happy day when everything has a place, with a label on every shelf saying what should be on it, and is there in its place whenever you walk into the space. Well done to everyone involved in the construction crew for getting us closer & closer to that glorious day!!!
I agree with that sentiment @Dermot It will need to be very aesthetically pleasing being in phase 1 and I know the wooden walls have other emotions attached to them so don’t really want to be slapping up shelving brackets on them.
The black shelves currently store a lot of junk that we’re not using. Some of that could be decanted to the snug, and useful things from the South desks put there instead.
I agree whatever is built & stored in phase 1 should look nice. Like a shop display of cool stuff on smart shelves.
It would definitely be good if the sewing stuff could be permanently stored in phase 1. The sewing machine is heavy to carry back and forth and seems to get buried under other junk in the snug every week. Maybe we make a sewing cupboard with doors to hide the less pretty bits?
The main thing is that we need to make it both simple and easy to put stuff back where it belongs. If it’s very easy to do the right thing, people will, and if it’s not, they won’t. So I vote that stuff that’s used in phase 1 should also be stored there.
This is definitely more achievable than world peace.
I think that bookshelf is probably not ideal - the shelves are too shallow for any of the big items so will probably just get filled with random junk.I think we should be aiming for a Montessori nursery style arrangement - where every shelf has a label (or a picture, like for two-year olds!) saying what exact thing should be on that section of shelf. Then nobody will have to guess where to put things, or waste time hunting for them because someone else has put them somewhere different, or clear them off work surfaces where they were left out because nobody knew where to put them.
I have a vision of a tall unit with two deep tall shelves at the top for the big toys, then a narrow shelf with a row of boxes that fit exactly in it for little fiddly bits (all labelled), then a row of cupboard doors hiding deep shelves at the bottom for big ugly toys. Happy to make it if someone can help me!
