Chisel Handle Split

Tags: #<Tag:0x00007fa491754cd8>

@woodtechs noticed today that one of the chisel handles is split. Brian seemed to think it’s maybe been hit with a metal hammer? See photos below.

Wondering what best course of action is? Glue and clamp or a replacement handle altogether? In meantime I’ve put a label on it and if gluing is way to go forward happy to do that next time I’m in.

We can try PU glue and a good tight wrap?

Also, obligatory reminder to only use light taps on these chisels. If you’re slamming on them, you’re using them wrong.

If it needs a new handle putting on, I’d be keen to give it a go! Appreciate repair is easier than replace but lmk if I can get some more practise with the lathe in for this :+1:t3:

Won’t say no to a nice new handle!

@dwade a couple of months ago i glued another split handle of the same chisel set ( guess it’s a recurring behaviour), It turned out in workable condition after a night drying.

@petermakesprints… You shouldn’t have offered your help… I’m handing you over to the @metaltechs as just yesterday they asked me if i can do some turning… What was it Roman?? Ah yes… “200 handles for the files in the metal area”.

Sorry Peter… You called it

Sweet - I need all the practise I can get and that’d be a great project for me when I have time here and there to get some experience under my belt! I was actually planning on starting to make some anyway for the metalwork files and was thinking I should check in first in case they were intentionally handless but that’s good to know

Can’t promise when I’ll get started but will keep you updated. @metaltechs/@woodtechs could one of you possibly grab a 2-part epoxy syringe sometime (unless we have some available or that someone can donate) so I can fix the handles on when I’ve made them?

Cheers,
Pete
