Heyo - considering asking for this as an xmas present but been told no torque wrench is worth it unless you spend £££ to get one with a calibration certificate - what are peoples thoughts?

Depends on your use case. I’m a big fan of those specific torque wrenches for a home workshop.

When buying used ones for CNC with @asander1, I just did some checks at key torque specs with a vice, string, and weight.

Fundamentally torque is just a proxy for fastener tension anyways. There’s a lot of variability in the friction that drives it.

Which is why torque limits on bikes are such a clusterduck: you wouldn’t want to install a steel bolt without anti-seize or grease, but, e.g., the 40 Nm instruction for crank bolts from many manufacturers is for dry bolts. Nonsensical.
