Ceramic Glazes

Hi all,

Is anyone planning to any stoneware glaze firing any time soon. I’ve never used glazed before and would love any advice? I think I understand the come system but I’m not entirely clear if there are dedicated earthenware and stoneware glazes within the same cone range?

@karin was suggesting paint on glazes for ease

Couple more quick questions. How far off being able to glaze fire in the space are we? Any recommendations on where to buy glazes?
Anything else I should know if I’m planning to eat off them. No lead or cadmium?

@cln_ceramics is planning to fire stoneware glaze soon as far as I know.

Some manufacturers have glazes who can work on both but most separate between stoneware and earthware glazes. Some glazes have food save labels. It needs to be 100% lead-free as we do not allow glazes in the space with lead in them.

Hi James,

As we’ve not got any studio glazes at the moment, brush on glazes are much more accessible and convenient. Whether a glaze is food safe can depend on several factors, including the firing itself, but some glazes are specifically advertised as food safe.

When it comes to the glaze firing, I’m planning one for later this month. I’m hoping to get it done the week of the 21st or potentially the weekend before, but I’ve got to arrange it with Etta. I’ll be firing to cone 6, so that’s 1220C - when choosing glazes do keep that in mind as the colour and the way a glaze performs changes with temperature.

If you’ve got any more questions just give me a shout. I’ll be sure to let you know once I’ve got a concrete date for the glaze firing.

Hello @Ceramics

I was wondering if anyone has glazes around of which I could use a small amount?
I only have one small bowl that needs glazing.

Thanks if you’d consider sharing!
