Putting out feelers to see if anyone else is interested in car mechanics in the space?

I would be interested…My car is a technogical black spot I probably should know more about!

VERY interested. Have a 1985 Mk I Golf GTi Cabriolet sitting in my garage gathering dust. Was a good runner when I put her in there, just needed some cosmetics done. Never got round to it and she’s been sitting dormant for 12yrs now, so would need some work doing. Would love to learn how to actually do the work as I’m a complete mechanical novice.

I’d like to be able to do more to my 1974 MG BGT. She runs - and has visited the space a few times! But needs some work. I’d be happy to chip in if we wanted to recruit someone to do some training.
On a side note, Hammersmith and Fulham adult education do some great car maintenance courses - including one specifically on classics. Great fun, and lots learnt. I rebuilt my twin carburettors at one Saturday session.

This is of interest, but I have space concerns. We are not really set up for this kind of thing.

I have to agree about the space concerns, we already have areas that are desperate for more space and they should be prioritised over the creation of new facilities, especially ones that would require space for an entire car for a unknown period of time being rebuilt or repaired.

I was thinking more of bringing parts in to work on and then rebuilding off site, but obviously would not be possible with things like engine blocks and chassis etc.

We could possibly put together a box of the most useful tools for this work, which shouldn’t take up too much room. Bringing in smaller parts to work on should be fine. I think work on complete vehicles can go on within a few rules: 1) no cars left overnight and 2) they can be worked on only if you can get a free parking bay at the edge (i.e. you are not blocking cars in or out of the car park while your car is temporarily disabled).

Added by edit:

  1. Absolutely no spillage of fluids and any removed fluids must be disposed of by the member responsible.

Although we might need to check whether this falls within the rules stipulated by Network Rail.

Our lease states

for the avoidance of doubt other uses such as the car spraying or vehicular repair or any other uses in connection with the motor trade industry are expressly prohibited.

Coupled with the high risk of annoying our neighbours with yet more half-working cars cluttering up the estate, Directors say: No car repairs at makerspace.

Using the metalwork tools to make/repair car parts for installation elsewhere is fine of course.

Thats one aspect to it, however if as @DAC17 says they want to repair small parts they bring from home there shouldn’t be an issue there, for example cleaning a part or something. And similarly as @boldaslove was sort of hinting at a user group that is meeting to discuss car repair etc is not hurting anyone.

yes

Yup I am interested

I am interested as well!, have done a lot of DIY car repairs, totally understand that the space is not the place to work on the vehicle itself, but many things can be rebuilt/repaired off the car and put back at home.

Hit me up if you plan on bringing something in!
Cheers,
Andy

anyone still interested in this after 7 years?!

might increase my chances of visiting soon (or neverᵗᵐ).

edit: one simple mod inspiration for cars in general:

and i would add the one i managed on mine, but got restricted away by forum rules! :pensive:

I’ve got a 72 VW camper and am planning to make a few bits over the winter.

I’m upgrading to Porsche brakes and need to make the the caliper mounts.
