Call out + poll: hand tools group

I’m throwing this out to all members…

Open to suggestions, to get the ball rolling I was thinking meeting up to:

Learn how to use sharpening wheel.
Learn how to repair planes from experienced member/s
Bring your old tools to repair/spruce up…sanding the handles, danish oil, sharpening chisels rust removal etc
Possible tool swap if you have too many of one type.
We could also do all the above for some of the spaces’ own tools, with guidance of @woodtechs

Going forward it be great to get together fellow minded members and maybe we make some hand tools together…so much to choose from to make!..mallet, cam clamps, interesting Japanese woodworking tools such as Japanese finger plane, Marking gauge or knife handle making., etc etc

If you’re game, click which Sunday you can make. I figured a month is enough time for folks to plan ahead. If the majority feedback is do it on a weekday, we can defintiely do that. I thought the first session being on a Sunday would allow the most number of people to come.

  • Sunday July 9th
  • Sunday July 16th

I could also do the 9th after 2pm.

Cool guys. I’m happy to be there for both Sundays.

@AndyPaine are you happy to share your knowledge about planes on the 16th?

And on the 9th whoever would like to drop by with their hand tools I’ll be there tinkering away. @woodtechs would one of you kind folk be able to show us how to use the sharpening wheel? On either Sunday?

2pm for both Sundays? Chip in with anything you’d like us to do/learn/etc

It’s going to be exciting! Yes, I get excited about handtools! W

Yep more than happy (you might have to tell me to shut up!). I’ll bring along some wooden and metal planes as well as some speciality ones I own. I can also show you how to use the Tormek (sharpening stone).

@woodtechs I’ll write up some kind of sharpening induction off the back of this and we can turn it into a proper induction

Aaaaamzing!!! I can’t wait!

And Japanese planes!

Cool , if you want to run with this and do the sharpening induction that would be fantastic.

Start a thread with the guys who write the induction to try and mantain consistently

If anyone likes to do background reading before tackling the practical, this pdf excerpt from The Anarchist Tool Chest has a good overview of the equipment involved in sharpening (if not the actual practice). https://lostartpress.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/anarchists_tool_chest_excerpt.pdf

Although it’s worth noting that the Makerspace sharpening equipment is a wheel, not flat stones.

The wheel is generally just the first part of the sharpening process, and I remember looking at some diamond stones during the basic induction.

Fwiw, I also have experience using a wheel like the one in the space, though not in its maintenance (which I’m keen to learn). And using it is my biggest reason for joining the space, so I’m very excited to see this session coming together.

Hi all,

Just a reminder our first hand tools group meet is tomorrow, Sunday 2pm. Look forward to hearing what everyone would like to do

Arg I forgot all about this sorry! How did it go?

Hi Sarah,

It was @erik and I … we had a nice chat with @Howard and @lewisss was kind enough to teach us how to sharpen chisels, we did 25 degree single bevel, 25/30 double bevel on the oil stone, hand sharpening to get the round concave curve and my favourite the hollow ground on the wet grindstone wheel.

Sorry I really didnt publicise the first meeting very well, my bad…but both Mark, Howard and @boldaslove said they’ll hopefully drop in for next Sunday’s meet up.

I think @AndyPaine is going to share some of his plane knowledge next week…which I’m looking forward to. Learning about tools, maintenance, and best practice use are good foundation skills to have.

What we do in the weeks ahead is totally open and up to us…possible ideas: to make a mallet (Paul also has videos on making a rebate plane), making a Japanese hand plane, a Japanese saw horse (handy for sawing at home in front of TV haha!), a home tabletop workbench, or silkscreen frames for the space…or whatever else members fancy.

oh in case its of interest, I found this free stash of Fine Woodworking magazine PDFs

and for inspiration here’s a hand made plane I saw on the weekend…a beauty!

hopefully see those above and @matthew_j_mewett @DAC17 @Esther_Gladstone @lukeLC @copplet @ArthurS @fincheee Sunday 16th, 2pm.

Not sure if I can make this Sunday. Then off for the 6 week hols, so maybe when I get back. Have a large box of tools I’m itching to rejuvenate!

Sounds cool, thanks for the heads up. Fingers crossed Sunday 16th will be work-free at my end, so I can come to this!

I’d like to come on Sunday too. Would that be possible or are there a limited number allowed?

Ah drat, I’d’ve made the effort to get down earlier. Oh well. Glad it went well anyway and I’ll definitely be there on the 16th (though will probably have to leave around 3).

6 weeks hols…nice! Yes, bring the old tools along for a spruce up.

We have the SL Raspberry Jam as guests on Sunday in the clean room from 13:45 till about 16:00, it’s a regular 3rd Sunday of the month fixture. Does that work out okay with you guys?

P.S. it’s also Lambeth Country Show, so they’ll be no local parking and much congestion: probably best not to drive in.
