Black mold under plaster bat

@CeramicsTechs

Under the left plaster bat there was quite a lot of black mold and fungi growing!

I imagine this is because clay and moisture was getting under the bat with no space to evaporate off

Ive given it a scrub with warm water and bleach.

For the next week or so, i think it’d be best if the left half of the bench could be left like this so it and the bat can dry out

What do you guys think / can a message be sent out about this so we can prevent it from growing back

Hi noah, thank you for getting in touch, and for cleaning and airing out the reclaim table top! It’s something I’ve been wondering as I don’t think there’s an easy way to prevent the mould returning with the current set up, it feels like moisture will inevitably get trapped under the plaster boards and mould will grow on the wood. Will have a chat with the other Ceramics Techs, as perhaps we need to rethink the reclaim table overall.

Thanks again for cleaning it though, in the short term we can try to keep it cleaner and ask people to wipe underneath when they are using the space. Will also chat about getting a message out or sign put up.

Happy to sand it once it’s dry so we get rid of the mould.

Couple of other suggestions from the top of my mind:

  • Consider a different material for the top of the bench which will be waterproof?
  • Keep plywood for the top, but have couple of detachable ones that could be used in rotation so we allow the wet ones to dry out completely while not losing bench space.

Happy to help with the implementation of any solution.

Hi, :smiley: getting rid of the black mould I can deal with on Monday, an anodised thick covering would be a good material to use or a stainless steel top or granite or welsh slate . I hope this is of some help . Keep well . Brian D=

4 little feet to keep about 1/2 inch gap for air to circulate would allow to dry every time is used and stop mould in my opinion
