Bike making clicking noise?

Hi bike experts, I’m looking for advice please. My husband’s road bike has started making a loud clicking noise with each rotation of the pedals, when the right pedal is at the bottom and the left one at the top. It doesn’t happen when we lift the wheel and turn the pedals, only when he’s riding it. We’ve taken the pedals off and greased them and it’s still happening. Any suggestions what to try next? Thanks in advance.

Sounds (pun not intended) like the issue I have.

Could be the chain alignment with the derailuer. Does it happen more when there is more power (high gear / on a hill / accelerating )?

cc: @frasco would be a person to ask here.

Could be a problem with the ball bearings in the bottom bracket?

First check the chainset rings for a broken or damaged tooth.

Have you tried checking the bottom bracket for looseness.

Hold both cranks and try to rock them out of the plane of the chainset.

If there is play, the chainset set could be interfering with the front gear mechanism once per revolution. You won’t see this just spinning the chain rings not under load.

Thanks all. We’ll check all these things next.

My money is on the bottom bracket bearings. They’re pretty easy to swap out.

bottom bracket seems very likely
