Big CNC Maker Buddy

Hi all - I’ve been trying to arrange a big CNC induction but haven’t been getting any replies from the CNC techs. I was hoping I could find someone to buddy-up with on a small (yet big) CNC project.

I’m looking to cut some lily pad shapes out of some 10mm MDF:

I have created the vCarve file and it’s ~45 mins of cutting:

I was hoping to find someone who has been big CNC inducted to supervise me to make these one day next week. I can be fairly flexible on timing, Mon 19th onwards.

Hi Jamie.

Yes, you should be able to get a hand with this and apologies for the techs silence. We need to clear up our mailing lists, etc. I am not about next week, hopefully someone else can step in and give you a hand. Failing that, I am about today most of late AM/PM and tomorrow AM. Then again w/c 26th, I should be able to get you access for your project.

Hey Jamie,

Sorry about the lack of response as well. Couple of quick questions. 10mm is reasonably thick for some of the finer bits we have. What’s the radius on the inner corners? And how critical is the exact shape?

Also what is the clearance between the lilypads? How limited on space are you. Just trying to work out what bit you’d be able to get between them

Also do you have your mini CNC sign off? Just confirming

I may be in next week. I can do inductions for the mini, but not yet cleared for the big CNC - I need to do a supervised induction on the big CNC. If there is a CNC tech available , maybe tie in with that, and get Jamie inducted and me rated to give inductions on the big CNC.

Hi James - Yes, I’m inducted on the desktop CNC and have done a couple of projects.

This isn’t a high precision job, so it’s not the end of the world if some of the detail has to be missed by using larger diameter end mills.

I’m also happy to use larger material to give better clearance between items. I hadn’t really considered the constraints of placing them so close together.

Try to make sure the mdf sheet you get is as flat as possible and no warp. A slight variation in height will mean cut won’t go through completely in raised areas. Currently we only have 4 toe clamps, so can’t clamp other than at corners, so warp is more of an issue.

It would be great if we can arrange this for next week. It’d be great to make this work with @dannz as his qualifying big CNC induction.

As mentioned I’m able to make any time work!

Hey I’ve also been looking at big CNC and will need to do some work in the next while, could I sit in and make it some sort of induction?

Have my mini CNC and my project is fairly undetailed but ideally looking for a 15-20mm depth

Any chance of getting this arranged this week?

Hey Jamie, asking the others about availability at the moment. Looking like a lot of people are busy this week, but will update/ask them to if something comes up

Hi jamie, I can help tomorrow evening from 6pm. Does this work for you?

Cheers.
Fin

I can also do 6pm Tues. @fin_wells - are you able to sign me off to give inductions and do this as a qualifying induction?

Absolutely brilliant @fin_wells - look forward to seeing you then!

I made a booking from 6pm for this.

So you guys are doing 6pm today?

Yes, we’re all systems go

Okay I might be a bit behind but I’m leaving now

This is a very good point.

I can recommend liberally applied double sided sticky tape to cover 50-70% of the surface and a 1mm cut beyond the sheet depth has worked for me many times in overcoming clamping issues.
