My wheels arrived today, so I was finally able to adjust the axle bearings and take some measurements for the wheel supports. I designed and cut the wheel mount bars from more if the same tubing.
To make it easier to get the spacing correct and mitigate twisting between tubes, I clamped up a weld jig. After getting the whole thing tacked up, I banged and bent the last few pieces into reasonable alignment.
Final hours of day were spent grinding off some pretty chunky welds. Overall the welds turned out better than I’d hoped after 15 years since my last welding project. Took a few tries to get the settings dialed in reasonably well. Even then, small adjustments depending on the type and orientation of the seams helped quite a bit.
After a harrowing three rounds of ordering and returning tube and tyre sets, I got the wheels done. And I’ve deciphered wheel and tyre sizing conventions.
With the wheels complete, I cut, drilled, and ground out the dropouts. Manged to get them welded on relatively aligned… I think. Likely will need to adjust with an angle grinder a tad.
Hi Dan, haha, yes it will have a sub cutout knob on the handlebars because having been heavily influenced by Jamaican culture all my life I play reggae dancehall style.
Also, having a 12v system means I use a 600w A+B class amp for the mids and tops and a 536w C class amp for the sub. So having a sub cutout and not dropping the bass until second verse does two things. Firstly it saves on battery power, but secondly, and more importantly…
Playing bass at full stretch all the time doesn’t give the air any space. When you play with bass high all the time there’s less appreciation for it. Playing dancehall style creates a thirst for the drop, and sometimes I won’t drop in it at all, because when I do there’s a greater satisfaction for the bass, unlike playing it all night long where you only really appreciate it when you first hear it.
I’m planning on having a few LED bulbs scattered here and there too.
The mount looks fab!
What material was used for the print?
Also, what’s the overall width, I’m curious to know?
I’d be immensely proud if it were mine!
Well done.
Agreed, it looks very impressive but just one query: I can see that the mount allows up and down movement but what about twisting, for when you lean the bike round corners or the road isn’t flat? My cheap and nasty trailer uses a tow ball just like a caravan would have.
