Best way to sharpen Gouges

I have a couple of vintage gouges I got off of ebay for a project that need sharpening. What would be the best way to do that in the space?

Hi Ananse,

For gouges it can depend on whether they’re incannel or outcannel (which side the bevel is on). For either my preferred approach is to get the bevel clean and then just lots of practise using hand stones. There’s also the tormek, depending on the type of gouge, but this can be a bit temperamental.

Incannel can be tricky, we do have a little diamond tool in the sharpening drawer.

What kind of state are the gouges in?

This is the link to get inducted on the Tormek https://discourse.southlondonmakerspace.org/t/woodturning-wheel-sharpening-tormek-induction/41959

I think that’s 4 outcannel and 1 incannel right?
I think I can skip the incannel one for this project.

Thanks for the link, I was inducted on the Tormek as part of the second woodturning induction on the old lathe, does that still count?

Yes, absolutely

Those are in good condition!

If I remember right Paul Sellers has a pretty good video on sharpening these using abrasives. Worth a look. And whatever you up end up doing id recommend stropping to really polish the edge.
