Bespoke picture frame for tablet

Heya! I’m a newbie (Haven’t signed up yet or had any inductions) and I’m interested in making an ornate-looking picture frame for my Surface Pro 7 tablet to sit in, with a few extra bits for usability (Open ports along the side, a hinged back with some closures to slot the device in/out, etc). I’ve never worked with wood before so if that’s not a super feasible beginner project then I’m happy to pay for materials, labour, etc. Just wanted to check here before taking the plunge.

I see two complications both of which aren’t too bad for a beginner but you should be aware of.

  1. for your first induction you are only going to get hand tools so carving something that looks consistent will be a challenge you also don’t get shown how to sharpen in the basic so hope our carving gouges are sharp or there is someone you can talk to about them
  2. the surface pro 7 has the air vents around the top and the top of the sides. you will have to keep them exposed.

I would suggest a rabbet for the surface to slide into that only goes along the bottom and sides.

If you take this advice make sure to ask about the plough plane (learn what one is from Rex https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVssyHgqsf8) in your induction. you can use it but we don’t talk about it a lot because it’s not very popular.
