I heard that the Bernina Favorit 740 is being removed, presumably to make space for the new Brother industrial machine.
Before we get rid of it, could we have a quick look at what capabilities we would be losing? The Brother will obviously give us an industrial machine for leather (though all of them can do leather with the right set-up), but the Bernina has some functions that the other industrial machines don’t have.
In particular, the Bernina 740 has a darning function and automatic ornamental stitches. The Domestic Singer 4411 and 4432 can do some decorative stitching too, and can be used for free-motion/darning, but they don’t have quite the same automatic ornamental-stitch functionality.
So I’m wondering whether the new Brother is essentially another straight-stitch industrial machine, and we would be replacing the only machine that offers these additional functions.
I may be missing some information; perhaps the Bernina is broken, or the new Brother is capable of more than I realise. I just wanted to understand why the Bernina is the one being replaced rather than the Singer before we get rid of it.
The bernina seems barely used, and isn’t being scrapped, and people have been doing leatherwork. I’ve not been making these decisions more than agreeing with other people who have proposed things based on what they’ve seen. But I’m happy to have a wider discussion etc.
I agree that the Bernina is probably the least-used of the three machines at the moment. I think, with only 19 members currently able to use any of these machines, there isn’t a huge amount of usage overall, so it’s difficult to draw much from which machine is being used by how many members.
I think part of the reason I’ve used the Bernina less is its placement. Previously, the table was being used for storing the embroidery equipment. That has now been resolved, although the scissors and tools hanging board above it still makes the position less than ideal.
The been in a was not beeping used because it was missing the runner band. I was told that you had agreed to get rid of it whilst I was on holiday. I think perhaps you need to talk to Nissa and Lia about this and make a decision on what is going to happen with the machine.
the band should have arrived? also it depends on what’s up with the leather also, also sorry I’ve not been in last weekend cat ill, he seems on the mend though
No it has not been ordered I ordered one that I paid from my own pocket and it was the wrong size as the previous broken one was binned by Nissa we didn’t have the size .
I ordered one, which was supposed to be delivered last friday, but I see the delivery on it has been updated for thursday, I accidentally ordered it from hong kong so it’s taken a while
To clarify what happened with the band: the Bernina was already broken when the part was discarded on the floor, and I tidied it away while clearing a messy room. I later learned that a gasket ring had been used in place of the official band. The absence of the part does not prevent a repair, as a replacement 5x322 band can simply be ordered.
I agree that the Bernina 740 Favorit has more functionality than the industrial Wimsew or the semi-industrial Singer. However, functionality has value only if it is used, and the Bernina’s learning curve means it is used significantly less than either. I initially proposed the Singer for removal, but Maz rightly pointed out that, historically, it gets more use. That correction is the reason we concluded removing the Bernina would allow for the dedicated leatherwork on the Brother.
The case rests on three points. First, the Bernina has been broken for several months, and two attempts at repair have not fixed it. Second, even if it were running, its position ( as pointed out by Karin) would make it the least likely of the semi-industrial machines to be used. Third, the addition of the industrial Brother places greater constraints on the space, with all industrial and semi-industrial machines essentially cordoned off.
I accept that the Bernina offers a degree of redundancy, and that this may be a layer we want to keep. However, it currently provides no additional functionality, and that redundancy has to be weighed against the space it occupies. I am happy to go with the group’s decision.
I disagree but it seems it is already decided. The Bernina could have been repaired before if someone actually mentioned it on discourse. I repaired the machine several times so it was getting used before the insduction were introduced. I don’t think anyone is inducted on the Bernina therefore it is not used.
