Assistive technology projects - Help people with disabilities - References

Hi all,

My partner ans I have recently launched a social project in Brazil called Meviro (meviro.org – “Me Viro” basically means “Don’t worry, I can do this!”) that aim to engage a yet incipient Brazilian maker community to develop affordable and accessible solutions that help disabled people with their everyday challenges.

At the moment, it looks like a version of instructables + thingiverse to people with disabilities, but we’ve got such a great response from the public and organizations, and that made us really motivated to improve it.

I’ll be coming to the open night on Wednesday, but just wanted to leave the topic here in case anyone know people/maker groups/labs/organizations that work with assistive technology/ design and that would be good for me to reach out to.

Thanks a million, guys! Looking forward to see some of you next open night.

Hi, I work in this world… But where I am isn’t as makery as I would like. you could try the ACE centre they might be able to point you in the right direction http://acecentre.org.uk/. There is ReMap: http://www.remap.org.uk/ a group of engineers around the country looking at solutions for disabled people. You might also be interested in this project http://www.eyewriter.org/ I’ve been meaning to try and make it for awhile now.

Let me know how you get on. I’ll rack my brain to see if there is anything else in there.

Hadeel’s bright sign glove is a brilliant invention, IMHO:

I’m so grateful for your tips, Rich! I had a look into all of them, and will make contact to people from the remap project today. I had come across with eyewriter before, and actually have translated all versions of their project to portuguese. Hopefully it will be useful to someone in our website!

Are you going to attend the open night tonight? It’d be lovely to meet you in person.

Mariana

That’s absolutely amazing, Dermot! Thank you for that!! I have never seen this concept before, do you know him by any chance?

I have seen something like this project, for example: http://www.motionsavvy.com/ That uses a tablet or other similar device, but first time I see it in a glove!

Thanks a million,

Mariana

Hi Hadeel is a she! I’ve met her, and know people who know her, so could put you in touch.
