Anybody interested in ordering from English Woodlands Timber?

I’m buying wood to make a dining table. It’ll likely be two slabs from English Woodlands Timber. It’s been a bit slow to get off the ground, but I’m hopefully lining up a video appointment to pick mine out tomorrow. I can’t get there in the week whilst they’re open so I’ll be opting for delivery. If anybody is ready to order (or thereabouts), it’d be great to be able to share some of the delivery cost.

I’ve a project in mind but am not done designing. I’ll let you know later today.

Actually, this is the place that’s all slabs right? I’ll need boards

I’ve been wanting to do the same kind of project. I thought I had a design worked out but suddenly lost confidence that it would look right in my house. So I wish I were ready to order slabs, but sadly not yet.

hmm, I was about 90% sure they did boards too but I cant obviously see that. Worth ringing up maybe? their prices seem good for what it’s worth

Hi, is this green wood? If they have green oak I’m interested

I think most of their stock is on their website so you can take a look. They have some fresh sawn structural stuff and some cladding which is listed as fresh sawn. What sort of thing were you after out of interest?

I’ve checked their website, thanks so much for sharing. I need off cut green pieces for non functional stuff (sculptures)… I’ll have to find a sawmill.

If you do find a supply of green wood I’d love some myself. I got some spoon carving stuff for my birthday which I’ve not really managed to use without a source of green wood. I only need little bits obviously and ideally in carving friendly species

I’ve had good luck going to Epping forest after storms, I contacted the rangers and got permission to take some green wood as well! Haven’t been up in a while but worth a trip up there with a bow saw/pruning saw to get some naturally felled bits.

Good idea, thank you. I’ll contact Forestry England.

FYI I found contacts through the City of London website, I’d contacted a few parks but even though I heard back it required a lot of chasing up with no result. Getting permission for scavenging was much more fruitful as it required less intervention on their half. There are restrictions legally for taking wood from forests/public land in general but Epping forest has special bylaws meaning - with restrictions - you can take some without express permission. Worth getting in touch though as the wardens have been really pleasant to talk to!

I didn’t reply to the main message originally but I’ve got a board saved I’m keen to buy. It’d be ~£50, when you have a quote for the shipping could you let me know how much you’re wanting for a contribution please @msparker ? Thanks!

I got some luck: firewood suppliers have plenty of it… but I have to go to surrey to cut and collect it.

Also Nick from English Woodlands Timber told me that they have some green wood offcuts, @msparker have you place the order already?

No not yet, I picked the boards yesterday and am awaiting a delivery quote.

Super, I’ll let you know as soon as I get details of the offcuts…

@dario @petermakesprints

I’ve got my quote through from EWT, and delivery is a stonking £130+VAT. Apparently to south london that’s essentially their minimum for any order (crazy!). That is them putting it on their transport when they’re swinging through. They’ve confirmed that adding a few bits onto the order wont change the delivery price. My order is two big slabs for a table (totalling about £500) and I’m pretty committed as I cant find what i want elsewhere and I cant drive there in the week (and it’d be dodgy on my roof anyway), so I’m happy to pay the lion’s share, but obviously i’d be very happy if you were to order and contribute something to delivery.

Same for anybody else, I want to submit soon though. cc. @mbg @James_Hunter @Giles (you’re always after wood!)

Phwoar :open_mouth:

I’ll get the reference numbers for the boards I’m after to you asap, is tomorrow ok? Can do today if that’s better!

@petermakesprints yeah that’s fine. I’ll put the order in Monday so we have the weekend to get organised and see if anybody else is keen

I’ve managed to get green oak logs in Surrey and going in Scotland this week (where I’ll fill the car boot with more logs)… so I’m ok with wood. @msparker if you need a small block for a spoon I can gift you one but I first need to find a chainsaw to cut logs into blocks in my back garden.
