[Advice wanted] - wiring up a Ring camera to the mains electricity

Hi everyone, hoping to get some advice from those more experienced with electrics…

Background

There was a Ring camera and floodlight for our side gate already installed when we moved in. Turns out it was wired into our neighbour’s mains electricity, which (unsurprisingly) has now been removed. As such, we now need to figure out a way to wire it up to our mains…

There is already an electrical junction box on the outside of the house where there’s a cable running to our shed already (some sockets / LED down lights). My plan was to wire up along the green line in the picture into there but before I do that, I was hoping to get some confirmation that this wasn’t a dumb / dangerous thing to do?

I’m pretty comfortable doing the practical aspect of installing (have installed plug sockets etc before) but lack the knowledge to know whether this is something we should be doing without upgrading at the consumer unit (the switch labelled microwave…). Tried to provide photos below but let me know if there’s any other info required

Thanks a lot for any help / advice that can be provided!

HI,
I am an electrician by trade.

The route suggested is perfectly fine, as long as you use cable at least 1.5mm and rated for outdoor use.

The problem is that the junction box is fed by a 16A breaker, which is too big for a Ring camera and for a 1.5mm cable.

The rating of the circuit needs to be reduced to 6A max.

In your configuration, the easiest way would be to install a outdoor rated UNSWITCHED fuse spur next to the junction box, and then from there to the light.

Installing a 5A fuse in the fused spur, will solve your issue.

If you need a better explanation, let me know and ill go more into details once I finish work.

Cheers

Hi Stefano - thanks so much, this is super helpful. So if I understand correctly, I can go:

Existing junction box → 1.5mm cable → unswitched fuse spur → 1.5mm cable → Ring doorbell

Would something like this work for the unswitched fuse spur? If I installed a 5A fuse in there?

Yep that would work, and yes, the process is almost correct only one correction

Junction box->2.5mm->fuse spur->1.5mm->ring camera.

You will also need to change that junction box with something more waterproof and with more entry points.
I suggest wiska box and 2x 20mm stuffing glands
