Advice wanted - drilling hole for Kensington lock in metal desk

Hello,
I want to make a hole or slot in the metal frame of my desk, so I can put the cable of a Kensington lock through it and anchor it to the frame. Any advice on how to do this would be appreciated thanks. I do have an electric drill and a bunch of drill bits for it.

Centre punch and a HSS drill bit.

Be careful if drilling steel with a bit bigger than 6mm as it can kick . Start with 3mm and go up in 3mm increments

fair warning, i would investigate how secure your particular lock is, kensington locks can usually be defeated with a bit of cardboard.

Thanks, though it turned out I don’t need to attack my desk with a drill after all as I have something else I can attach it to without surgery.
