A use for all the sawdust? Who likes mushrooms?

A random woodworker I follow on Instagram has been using his sawdust to grow mushrooms. Looks like fun!

Beautiful specimen! If anybody wants some spores, I got a couple million of them in the freezer. (Pleurotus Columbinus). I recommend wood shavings for a faster grow, saw dust gives you more fruiting bodies, but it takes a lot longer for them to fruit.

I think mushrooms need sterilized substrate… sawdust can be used but it requires extra processing. Yes @Geraetefreund is the expert.

Pleurotus is quite hardy and you get good results just pasteurizing the substrate. Oyster mushrooms are super beginner friendly and really tasty. Personally, I’d make sure not to have any MDF in my substrate… but that’s just me being extra cautious.

I just looked up Pleurotus Columbinus and my family are universal in their opinion that they would never eat a blue mushroom!

So, is there a reason you are growing the blue variety?

When exposed to heat, they keep their texture better and taste phenomenal. Actually they look rather a pretty grey with a slight blue tint when ready to eat. Really, I don’t think of the health benefits when consuming them, they are just fantastic in stir-fries. :mushroom:

They also thrive really well on cardboard, just sayin’…
