3D Printer Purge

@members there are three 3D printers in the Makerspace at the moment.

  • Ultimaker 2 (Makerspace property and actively used)
  • RepRap
  • MakerBot CNC (Makerspace property, unused, untested)

Unless their are objections the MakerBot should be scrapped for parts and could @dermot please could you remove your 3D printer as it’s not been used in a long time and is occupying space that will be the electronics area.

IMHO it will be a shame to tear down the cupcake for part as what you’ll get out is not really worth much. I’ll be happy to refurbish it and bring it back to the space when I’m done or alternatively I’ll be happy to get off your hand in exchange for a small donation.

It was obtained when we bought the vinyl cutter.

As the only @3dtechs person, I suggest if there are no objections from @directors or others by the end of the weekend you take it and arrange a donation with the @directors

At one point in the past I had intended to refurb the cupcake as well. It’s one of those projects I’m likely never to get round to starting though.

@peter_hellyer are you officially taking this on, or can we just take up @laurent_muchacho on his offer?

@Dermot I wasn’t clear if you got this message, are you planning to keep the machine in the space?

Yes thanks, I’d like to clean it up and get it going again. I’ll put in a storage request. If we get really short of space I’ll be happy to remove it.

Cupcake…realistically? Stick it in a display cabinet!

The issue is that it has consumed a relatively large amount of work space out the front.

Perhaps you could move it out the back with a storage request so it’s not in the way.

My question was more about the longer term plans in relation to the space?

Yeah, I guess one plan would be to get it running and see if it’s useful to the space. It can print with flexible filament for example, which the ultimaker can’t.

So we should ask @pip to design in additional space perhaps, a shelf maybe?

@Dermot this will be no use (or really minimal for the real estate it take) to the space when running in it’s current configuration. It might be useable as a specialised machine that can’t do much anyway if you scrap down the old electronic and replace it with a more modern one. But this is my personal opinion.

Flexible filament can be printed on the U2 Usually it is easier with an upgraded feeder but it should work on the stock feeder. A few things that

  1. dry it in the oven at 50º for at least 4 hours
  2. print at speed below 20mm/s
  3. print temperature should be set at least 10º over recommended manufacturer temp

Might be useful

Anyway my offer still stand otherwise I’ll look forward to see it working one day good luck @peter_hellyer

I think they’re mostly discussing dermot’s rep rap above.

In any case, whilst I’d be happy to tinker with the cupcake, it’s so very low on my priority list it may well never happen. If it’s of use to you @laurent_muchacho I’d rather see it used than sit waiting for a day that may never come.

@laurent_muchacho for clarity: are you talking about my Prusa?
