3D Cube Construction for an Illusion Costume

The Effect: 3D box with front doors opens to a garden scene with the inside panel faces depicting garden, trees and sky and a dark forest floor. The Cheshire Cat is lazing in the branches of a tree in the centre. It’s my head but a cat-sized puppet body instead of mine. The tree trunk in the centre is only an inch across making the human headed cat seem impossible.

Construction: A2-sized cubic frame (594mm) with specific modifications for the illusion that might weaken parts of the cube frame and require extra support structure to make sure it doesn’t deform. I’m not sure yet if I’ll be able to wear it or if it’ll be a stationary setup.

I’ve wanted to make something like this for years and finally have an excuse. I’ve built three scrappy scale prototypes of increasing size and I’m ready to build the final thing which needs to be strong but light, and be easy to disassemble and assemble for transport in the car.

I had decided on Makerbeam or Openbeam extruded aluminium for the frame with 3mm wood panels inside and similar for cladding outside. I’ve never built anything with Makerbeam before though so if anyone has, it’d be great to get some advice, especially re 45 degree diagonal beams.

Having just joined and seen the metal and wood worshops I have other options now. I’m open to building with less expensive material but I’m not sure I’ll have enough time to go through inductions. The party is August 2nd which is only 23 days away.
