Wooden modular/box shelves

Tags: #<Tag:0x00007fa49984c9a8>

Hello all,
I’m planning, when I’ve had my woodwork induction, to make a series of boxes that stack to make shelves. Trouble is the floor is uneven… Was thinking about making a level platform for them to stand on and then running skirting board over the front. Do we think this is the best idea? and for some reason I cannot begin to imagine how that platform would be made? any tip[s greatly appreciated.

cheers
Michael.

Hi Michael

You could make a plinth with adjustable feet in the corners to make level and hide behind a kicker / skirting.
Or, just use packers and scraps of wood to level and then conceal with a kicker or skirting

Hope this helps

Keith

Hi Keith

Perfect, thanks.

Lesson 1. Don’t over-think it!

Michael.

I literally just did this at home. Used the “stack of packers and scraps” method, with each stack under the landing point of the shelf boxes above. I’m putting 40mm strips of ash on the front of the joints between boxes, then also along the edge of the plinth with a shadow gap to hide any irregularities in the floor.

That looks amazing. Loving the shadow gap approach. from your sketch it looks like a sort of mini kick board that you’d find in a kitchen? Was going to use skirting but this is better.

cheers and congrats!
Michael.

Kind of like a kickboard I suppose, but much smaller! The gap varies from about 3 to 10mm.

Depending on how uneven the floor is, you can either leave the black piece loose between the trim and a stop block behind and let it rest on the floor, or scribe off the floor and make a piece to fit exactly. For the short pieces in that photo I linked to, I did the former. I’m currently doing the adjacent wall and that’s a 1.5m straight piece so I did the latter.

The main drawback of this design is that the gap is a haven for dust and dirt and the hoover doesn’t get in there. You need to run a brush round all the edges,

I think I’m sold on the idea. I like the neatness of it. brushing/cleaning is no prob.
