Hi @woodtechs
I wondered if you guys know how I can bore a hole of 10mm through a 25mm diameter dowelling and roughly 250mm long
could this be done on a lathe?
Hi @woodtechs

@Beth is probably best placed to answer this
a long auger bit would be your best bet i think
And some sort of jig to keep it aligned?
Another thing you might consider is starting with a blank bigger than 25mm, drilling the hole first, then turning the outside diameter whilst holding the work between centres located in the hole you just drilled. Standard practice when making flutes. Depends how accurate you need the hole position to be.
You could eyeball it if you’re feeling confident
as a matter of curiosity can you put drill bits on the tailstock of a wood lathe ? is that a thing ?
I think only a couple of members are induced in boring on the Wood lathe? It’s not covered in the current inductions
I believe it is.
Using my method you could bore the hole with a drill first, then turn the outside to match.
Yes however the bit and brace is in the basic woodshop induction and super easy to use.
Depends if the dowel actually needs turning afterwards or not.
I seen a youtube video of someone using the metal lathe to bore the hole, I’m assuming that’s not possible?
You just need a drill chuck with the right fitting for the tail stock. There are some drill chucks in the metalwork shelves, but I have no idea if they’re compatible with the wood lathe.
the drill chuck from the pillar drill fits in the lathe
Bad practice - plus the metalwork lathe isn’t up and running yet.
nah that’s cool
I meant the drill chuck from the wood work drill press fits the wood lathe
I get what @RichM was saying about drilling the hole first, but i’m not that confident on the lathe
so was wondering what else I could do
also I was wondering if you guys know what type of wood will give you this burnt orange finish when vanished ?
I was replying to this…
I’d suggest your best bet is to wander down to the Makerspace when you know someone knowledgeable is around and get some help from them
