I had contacted the restart project a couple months back about setting up a party. They are interested in setting up a women’s skill share at the space on the 6th December. Which would involve women sharing repair skills with local community but not excluding men! Do we think this is a good fit for the space. Is the 6th December too short notice? Which I think falls on a Tuesday evening.
Do you think it worth seeing if the restart party would like to join forces with the Makerspace party on the 10th?
It could work, I guess the issue might be that Restart volunteers are almost all male and mostly people just come to them to use the service, I’ve not personally seen any one come back after a restart party.
I’d say yes to a Tuesday evening. It’s a good fit with us, and not our problem if it’s a bit short notice! Better to get back with a yes sooner rather than later.
Short notice, would rely on Restart being ready to do this. Hard to imagine there being time to recruit people for it.
If we’re going for it we need to get a move on!
@members any objections to this proposal? It would mean giving over the Clean room for likely a couple of hours early evening on Tuesday 6th December (that correct @StudioNelle?)
Considering there’s been no opposition and it’s only going to occupy the clean room for a few hours on a Tuesday…and the lead time is very short, plus the directors approve, plus we’ve had a good experience with Restart in the past and like to support them, plus it might encourage more women through the doors…
Shall we say yes?
It’s Janet you’re in contact with? Just get her to confirm with an email and some details and we can get it in the calendar.
Are you happy to run with this and be there on the night? You need others’ input?
What about the 17th or the 31st of January 2017?
So
at women skill share, we usually choose a subject we want to learn
about and try to find a knowledgeable woman able to share her skills and
run some theory and hands on session.
We had in the pas skill shares around lamps and bulbs and hands on on how to rewire them.We had others around Linux, and SS Drives and how they can help revive an old dying windows laptop; one on how to build a PC…
Would you be able to share any of what you do at the maker’s place?
I was thinking about building some sort of robot or animated thing with parts from old appliances / computers…
Restart are quite good at rustling up a crowd. So if you feel it’s worthwhile we can give it a push.
Is it a women only event? I was never clear on this. Personally I’m not that keen on that approach (unless it’s on religious belief grounds). But a women-centred event sounds great. As long as we’re not making the space women-only during that time. What do people think?
