Who wants to get a virtual reality setup?

I badly badly badly want one of the VR headsets coming out this year (probably the HTC Vive). But it’s £700 plus the £250 I’d need for a new graphics card. I’m going to have trouble getting this one past my wife (let alone my bank account).

Would anyone like to club together for a headset and PC to run it, for the space? It’d be something like £1,500 all in.

Why not buy a second hand oculus rift dk2?

Because they’re pants compared to the Vive. Unreliable and limited tracking, worse display & optics, no hand tracking controllers.

I’ve had a play with a DK2 and you can tell it’s a devkit.

Or wait a couple of weeks and you will be able to get one for £50 down the market

This space interests me a lot. If it was the Meta 2 sure  this is the future.

I’ve got a dk2 at work that I’m happy to vaguely demo to anyone interested.

@tomnewsom is quite right though, it’s quite a nauseating experience.

We have several DK2 units at LCC and they work fine. The problem is that you are sat still when the video is moving. No matter which kit you get this won’t change.

Holy crap! That thing looks awesome!

The vive is designed to let you stand up and walk around (and the content for it is designed around that)

Any VR software that accelerates the camera without user input is basically faulty and shouldn’t be used.

Let’s also attempt to blag some of this equipment.

If we can draw up a list of benefits the Makerspace would bring to a company that would loan/give/discount us a VR setup then I have a friend who says she’s got the right contact…bit crytic, and not sure what manufacturer she has in mind…

Worth a try

I bought a Vive. It’s amazing.

I’ll bring it to the space for a hands-on session at some point (will advertise it!). We can push all the furniture aside and run wild in a big free-walking space

Would love to try this!

@boldaslove, @Barnaby_Coote - Would you prefer Sunday or Monday evening next week? ( 16th or 17th)

Sunday could work for me but need to confirm

@pip and @peter_hellyer -you also Liked my previous post

Yep also up for bumping into furniture with a headset strapped over my eyes  either day good for me, Monday preferable, but which ever day more people are free.

This sounds great, please count me in. Monday would work better for me…

Ok, monday it is
