Vinyl cutting

The plotter cutter page indicates that there’s a raspberry pi to connect to so that you can print over WiFi.

Browser-based control

Plug the computer end of the USB cable into the Raspberry Pi Zero W taped under the cutter, and ensure that the board is powered and a green light is visible.
Then you can upload an HPGL file from any device connected to the SLMS WiFi by visiting http://slmsvinyl.ddns.net/

I think this is now incorrect, so direct cable from computer is only way to go via USB.

Has anyone done this recently? Would love to use it for some stuff!

Pi should still be there, @Kyle mounted it inside the cutter with a loopback.

It is possible the dynamic dns has failed…

K great! Yeah there’s something inside, no longer taped under. Will update tool page.

I used it (via the Pi) about a month ago but it may have stopped working since. You need to plug the USB of the PI into the vinyl cutter so it’s powered and then wait a min for it to start responding to requests to http://slmsvinyl.ddns.net/

Have updated that little section! Thanks all.

Thanks all for jumping in! I moved off a dynamic dns provider in November but missed the tool page update. I’ve now fixed that. Can you try http://vinyl.space.southlondonmakerspace.org/ a couple minutes after plugging in the pi?

To confirm / for those like me who have come to this page as part of trying to use the vinyl cutter - when you have turned the machine on, and the USB cable coming out of the slot on the right is plugged IN to the USB Type B 2.8 female connector right next to where the cable emerges (photo below) (and it has been in this state for > 120 seconds), going to the http:/ vinyl… link shared above should result in seeing something other than shown in the below screenshot!

Other thread from semi-recent usage attempts: Vinyl Cutter I've never used it

I checked, and the microcontroller is getting power from the USB port.

I had to leave the other night, did you have any luck getting it to work?

Alas, I did not. Next thing to investigate would be what someone talks about doing in a linked thread of sending data across using the serial port. Bit beyond me right now!
