Ubuntu installation on Laptop?

Hey,

Currently struggling to get Ubuntu mate 22.04.5 LTS installed on an older Lenovo laptop, Wondering if anyone has any experience with this and debugging Gnu Grub?

Some research has lead to this post on reddit (same errors etc)

Do we have any spare USB sticks i can try using (as suggested by the above post) or if not if anyone is around this week and fancies helping out here I would be most grateful!

If it’s of interest we could setup Netboot.xyz on the space network and configure network booting so you could just install the OS without a USB stick.

Did this at home recently and it was shockingly easy to setup.

That would be cool, this is definitely new turf for me so definitely defer to your expertise

I’m updating the NAS now, will install docker etc… get it working but I’m not there right now so someone will need to test.

when done should be a case of plugging your laptop into ethernet, then using the boot menu (usually F12) to select network and then it’ll give you something like this:

netbootxyz - LinuxServer.io

It’ll download and run the OS installer over the network which will then allow you to install it.

Oh mate unreal! Cheers!

Okay, without going to the space to test, that should be up, you can plug in on the cable in the clean room, hold F12 and see if it boots, let me know (with pictures) if it doesn’t work.

This will only work for UEFI devices, you might need to tell your BIOS to boot UEFI, not BIOS, your friendly neighbourhoot LLM will help if you give it a screenshot of the BIOS or your model number/brand.

Hey, Just an update on this, I actually spent another hour on it this morning and managed to get it working, Sadly a simple case of a new etcher (Rufus) and changing some settings managed to get a successful boot.

Thanks for all your help!

That’s so handy, I have some all in one PCs that I need to convert to linux. I’ll bring one in and test it.

That would be awesome, at the moment it’s only configured for UEFI, but if I install proxyDHCP we can have BIOS too, but not sure theres a lot of demand for that.
