This feels like something we just need to get on and finish…
Many months ago @conomara and I started preparing a ‘space induction’ – a sort of Open Evening tour with all the details filled in…but many many other things cropped up and pushed this to the back burner.
Now however seems a good time to resurrect this: we have a growing membership and questions like: “where do the bins go” and “who buys toilet paper” keep appearing here.
The idea of the orientation is to give members a fairly indepth tour of what’s what, who’s who and how’s how (whatever that means). It covers most of the main practical aspects of the space, and very importantly come with a dollop of Makerspace culture.
Anyone around on Saturday to work with me to get this knocked into shape? I have the bones of it already. We can start from the gates of the BFE (while explaining what that stands for) and move though every area of the space till we get to the part of the snug that just trails off into darkness.
Who’s up for this? I was thinking around 1pm after the open source laser cutter demo
We’ll document what we can, but the Makerspace is fairly dynamic…
Thanks to @Tom_Hampshire and @frasco for going through this with me on Saturday. It was a useful process for me: very handy to have an experienced hand and a brand new member to show around.
We started from the gates of the estate and worked our way to the snug taking in every aspect of Makerspace we could think of – I’m sure more will crop up. The history and culture and current governance/roles setup etc of course also are woven in to the fabric of it.
Anyhow: it looks like it takes roughly an hour by the end of which you’ve probably forgotten the details of how to lock the front gates or which colour of bin bag to put where at what time – but you’ll know that there are details, and roughly where to find those details.
We’ve had it in mind to offer these for all members for about a year now, (a proposal was that it might be a condition of shutter access)…but you know what it’s like… Now, with our current membership size it seems an important part of the mix so that we’re all on roughly the same page.
So…I reckon this can be done in fairly big groups: it’s basically a talk and walk with a few questions.
I’m working Good Friday, but was wondering about doing some of these on Saturday afternoon? Or Sunday.
If there’s interest I’ll make a sign-up post in the morning.
