Paul I’m really sorry I just noticed a sideways embedded nail that got clipped in the thicknesser, I need to be more careful with the metal detector clearly.
I will come and try to help with re-sharpening if it’s caused damage to the knives.
Ouch thanks for letting me know. I will have a look at the knives tomorrow.
We send these off for professional sharpening, we don’t do it ourselves.

There was a pretty big nick on the knives and they needed swapping. @fin_wells had to spend a couple of hours on it on Sunday (thank you) as I was too busy.
It seems the new knives still need a bit of tuning to get them working just right. I won’t be around for a while but Fin says Joe will have a look.
In the future we should avoid running reclaimed boards through it entirely, even if they been checked with the metal detector. The risk is just too high and setting knives is a pretty tedious task I’d like to avoid us having to do as much as possible! and of course the hassle and cost of sending them out for sharpening, and the lost steel on the knives.

I don’t think it’s a mistake I’ll make again any time soon at any rate and it being my first time using the thicknesser I should have started with something less likely to have metal in it.
I honestly don’t think it’s a problem with the metal detector, I think I just should have been more careful using it and made sure I knew what it was like when it found something. At any rate I’ve just been hyper paranoid and gone over every piece of wood I have in the pile to plane to make absolutely sure they’re all free of everything.
